Marketing Videos and Pictures for the Club – keep ’em coming

Hi everyone,

Just a gentle nudge as it’s not quite so cold out there, when you’re at the club or on the water, don’t forget to take a selfie or a quick video snippet for our club marketing videos.

Informal, fun, working on boats, sailing, rowing, etc be as creative as you like.

Getting together for social events at the club? Why not raise a glass to the camera and just say hi? As many pictures of you as possible would be fantastic.

Don’t worry if you’re not at the club, you’re the stars of the club ?? so any background is fine.

We’ve got a WhatsApp group for questions and if you’d like to join it just let me know.

If you don’t use WhatsApp that’s fine as I’m available on the email below.

If you don’t want to be in a video or picture that’s fine too as we want to showcase snippets of your adventures on the water too. A gaggle of geese flew directly over us last week but sadly I wasn’t quick enough. There’s so much opportunity out there.

Thanks everyone,

Jane Dare

New(ish) Members (and those with a good memory).

Calling all new(ish) members.

Cast your mind back to when you joined Tudor. We’d like to hear how well we do as a club to make the joining experience clear, easy, and welcoming.

And, as our strength is in our community, we’d like your input. Please click on the link below which will take you to a short survey. It won’t take more than 5 minutes to complete and your answers and comments will be anonymous. The survey will be available until Monday 20th February.

Your input is really appreciated and will enable us to update and enhance the experience of finding our club, joining our club, and the early weeks of membership.

Even if you’re not a new member, you are very welcome to complete the survey if you want to contribute to improving the experience for prospective and new members.

Dinghy Tie-Downs

Lasers in the small compound may have noticed the new wires in place for tying down your dinghies. Many thanks to Ian DuCaine and his team for putting these in place. Please do use these to prevent your boat from getting blown around in strong winds.

Icicle Series

This Sunday is Icicle Series 3 starting at 11am from the club line. The weather gods look like they might be smiling down this time (fingers crossed) so please come down and join in.

The first race of the series was blown off due to high winds. The second race was a chilly drift with one boat sailing faster backwards than forwards and another with chunks of ice sliding over the side on each roll tack.

Tudor Rower Conquers the Atlantic

Kevin Watkins who learnt to row with Tudor completed the challenge of a lifetime when he arrived at Nelsons Dock, Antigua in the early hours of Thursday morning (UK time) last week.

Kevin, Gemma Best and Adam Siggs (Team Raring to Row) left La Gomera in Canary Islands on the 12 December together with 42 other crews as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2022 and rowed the 3000 miles to Antigua finishing 44 days, 11 hours and 39 minutes later having battled with extreme weather conditions during the race.

Kevin said ……

“In completing the challenge team Raring to Row have so far raised £33,816 for Action Medical Research a leading UK wide charity which funds research into rare childhood diseases.Tudor Rowers helped support this very worthwhile cause last summer when they raised over £3000 doing a 24hr sponsored row. If you would like to support this very worthwhile cause and show your support for Kevin then there is still time to make a donation on the teams just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/raringtorow“.

Congratulations Kevin, Gemma and Adam for a job well done!

Another busy Tidal Diamond this week, which is great to have at this time of year. I’m tempted to keep some content for this section next week, but I shall throw caution to the wind and trust something will turn up in time!

Firstly something I’ve picked up both from the KHM Twitter feed, and direct from the KHM at the Dockyard Port Forum this morning. There is a new Small Craft Guide which can be downloaded from https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/-/media/khm/portsmouth/documents/22_0762_qhm-portsmouth-publication_a4-digital.pdf?la=en-gb&rev=08424ec508f44f498705634f94b7bb51&hash=BBB0E08DBA963B0065DDC718435ECE8D (that’s a URL and a half!). They are keen to get this out there as it is not just a rebranding (quite a large exercise to just replace a Q with a K), but it also clarifies how to enter and leave Portsmouth Harbour. With the safety requirements to cope with ferries, Naval vessels and small pleasure craft of different types it isn’t necessarily that obvious, so do take a look.

Secondly, and this has come to my from multiple directions, and I have included it in the past as well. It bears repeating though, and that is the issue of Cold Water Shock – which isn’t just a winter thing. The RYA have an article and video available at: https://www.rya.org.uk/blog/cold-shocking-truth. Being informed may just save your life (he types, wondering if he should lighten the mood before finishing now).

To round off then, I will just encourage you to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard or touch screen, and write something about being new to the club. Having joined in 1968 I’m not sure as I class as new, even with an ish, and even with a good memory, was a tiny be young to remember much – maybe I can find an angle there!

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Martin Davies and Alison Mayor of Southsea Sub-Aqua Club have led numerous wreck investigation projects, many of which have a connection to the WW2 Allied invasion of Normandy.

This talk is about just one of the 7,000 ships and craft that was lost during Operation Neptune. The Southsea Sub-Aqua Club award winning project to investigate an unidentified wreck in the approaches to Portsmouth revealed a tragic story that had remained untold for nearly 70 years.

Drone Footage of the Club

Hi everyone,

As part of the plan to have video of our club and harbour for YouTube you’ll occasionally notice a drone flying around the slipway and into Broom. This will continue as the weather improves.

You’ll never be in a close up on this particular footage but we would like to include aerial footage of all the club has to offer when boats and kayaks are on the water.

If anyone has a concern with an aerial shot of them on the slipway, or at sea being used on YouTube please contact me privately. It’s highly unlikely your face will ever be identifiable, but obviously we plan to respect your privacy.

Atlantic Row Update

For those following the Atlantic Challenge this year and Tudor club member Kevin Watkins, team Raring to Row is nearing the finish line. YB tracking currently has an estimated finish of the 26th January and at the time of writing (Monday evening) the team has less than 150 miles to go. 21 amazing teams have finished so far with plenty of new world records set. Raring to Row is next to finish. Kevin’s team mate Gemma Best is about to make history by being the first woman to row the Atlantic Ocean twice. It’s been an amazing journey for them ranging from dolphins to wrecked hands, rogue waves, barnacles and broken toilet buckets. Follow the finish on live stream (and catch up) on the Atlantic Campaigns Facebook page or watch on the Atlantic Campaigns YouTube channel. There’s plenty of amazing footage and photos.

Go Kev!

It looks as though 2023 is getting off to a flying start, or am in in the wrong type of club there – perhaps the drone footage will cover the flying! The social calendar is filling up already, and the full programme hasn’t been published yet. On the water activities are being kept alive by the rowing section. On one hand I don’t envy them out there in the current temperatures, on the other hand I’d probably rather be on the water that under my boat preparing for launch (which to be fair I haven’t been doing either). Whatever your particular club activity, or activities, the signs are it is going to be a good year, so watch out for your renewal emails and don’t forget to get them sorted. If you are having problems with them let us know in plenty of time to get things sorted.

Exec Introductions

Commodore – Colin Thorpe

Firstly, thank you for trusting me to be Commodore for the next 2 years. I very much appreciate the support that people have given me over the last week or so.

I’d also like to reiterate the thanks given to Richard and Cathy at the AGM for the massive amount of work done by them over their time at the club. A tough act to follow!

I joined Tudor in 1995 as a novice dinghy sailor, and then bought a cruiser with my wife in 2002. I also occasionally row and paddle. I’ve been involved with small businesses and charities for many years, and so hopefully know my way around what’s need to keep Tudor compliant and safe.

It’s an exciting time at Tudor, with an ever-growing range of activities to get involved with. I hope to help members make the very best of all that we have to offer, whether that’s having a go at a new activity or coming down to the clubhouse for a drink with friends. We’ve already started to look at how we can make each activity more accessible for people to try, how to support new members, and how best to co-ordinate on-the-water and shore-side activities.

Please do always get in touch with any feedback or suggestions.

Vice Commodore – Rob Waring

Hi,

I’m been a member at TSC for around 25 years and currently own SEQUIN, a Sadler 25. You may know me from our vocal Jack Russell who accompanies us every time we go afloat. He really is pleased to see everyone… honestly?

I’m really pleased to serve you as Vice Commodore for another year and look forward to a great 2023 where I hope as individuals and as a club we can continue to prosper.

The Exec is developing some new initiatives for the club to help it grow and become an even better place to be and we’ll keep you informed of progress. As always we’ll need your help and support.

All the best for a great season.

Rear Commodore – Jane Dare

Hi everybody

In keeping with the introductions above, and in case you weren’t at the AGM earlier this month, here’s a little about me.

Some of you will know me as I was previously the Rowing Captain. Rowing is my main passion at the club (I co-own the gig Friendship with four fabulous friends) but I also Kayak and plan to learn Dinghy sailing this year. I’m sure you’ll see me out there falling in … a lot.

My background is twenty five years in a corporate life holding project management and people management positions across HR, Recruitment, professional development, and Marketing. About seven years ago I left (for a quiet life) and now own and run a small business.

I believe Tudor has not only the most fantastic facilities and access to a beautiful harbour, but importantly THE best people with a wealth of knowledge, experience and friendliness, and I’m excited to help harness all of that and enable each of you to get the most from being a member of Tudor across all our water and social activities.

Rowing Update

Last Sunday TSC hosted the first race of the Tudor Winter Trophy series, a set of three short and sharp sprints within the harbour. Six gigs, all with mixed crews, took part in the race: from the club start line, down the Broom channel, around South Salterns and then back to the club.

The wind was quite intense, but the low tide helped to keep the boats sheltered from the wind. The first crew crossed the finish line after 24 minutes, and all the others followed closely. The rowers (and the supporters) then had a warm soup and a drink in the clubhouse, buzzing for the first race and looking forward already to the next one!

The Hamble River Rowing came along with a team and some supporters, and their captain Amanda, long time friend with the TSC rowers, said: “The first race of the Winter Cup was a great start to the New Year- not too long! The sun was a welcome sight, after all the recent wind and rain. As ever, we were made to feel very welcome by Tudor’s rowing section and the hot soup afterwards was the perfect way to warm up. Thank you Tudor!”

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing, new people are always welcome!

Marketing Update

Promo Video

Hi everyone, lots of bits to update you on and let’s start with a great opportunity to have some fun. As I mentioned back in December we plan to launch an official YouTube channel for the club and to kick this off we’re creating two videos.

The first will be a promotional video featuring lots of fun footage and pictures from all of you. This video will be used to showcase our club internally and externally and represent all the water and social activities we offer. Many of you have already signed up to be part of this.Thank you, it’s really exciting to see everyone coming together to have fun . There’s still time to put your hand up too.

So, ways to get involved …

If you’ve already told me you’ll be involved I’ll be adding you to a ‘promo’ WhatsApp group over the next few days. Full instructions on what to do will be given there. It’ll be really simple and you’ll be able to complete at home, at the club, on the water, anywhere you fancy.

If you’d like to be involved, please let me know via WhatsApp or on the email below. Everybody welcome.

If you’d like to be involved but don’t use WhatsApp, that’s OK too, I can send instructions via email. Just contact me on the email address below.

I’m delighted so many are already volunteering to be part of a montage about our fabulous club. It’s been fun hearing the ideas you’ve all got. It’s not too late to be part of it.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is on March 8th. In previous years we’ve had a TSC tribute to our awesome women members on Facebook. This year we’re going up a gear to celebrate you all and encourage more women to join us and feel empowered on the water.

The plan is to make a video from your pictures and video snippets. The video will be used on our social media and be available on YouTube. It will be shown at our open days and used in recruitment programmes. It will only take minimal effort I promise and I hope will be really fun to do on and off the water.

Here’s how to get involved…

If you’ve already told me you’ll be involved I’ll be adding you to the ‘IWD’ WhatsApp group over the next few days. Full instructions on what to do will be given there. It will be easy to do and you’ll be able to complete it anywhere you fancy and join up with other women if you prefer.

If you’d like to be involved, please let me know via WhatsApp or on the email below.

If you’d like to be involved but don’t use WhatsApp, that’s ok too, I can send instructions via email. Just contact me on the email address below.

We have an amazing community and a great opportunity to celebrate each other and inspire women of all ages to get on the water.

Tudor Members Lounge on Facebook

Did you know there’s a TSC closed Facebook group called Past and Present? The beauty of this group is that it’s a closed community where you can chat about the club, ask questions, advertise your social events on and off the water etc. It’s definitely not used enough, so we’re relaunching it in the coming days as the ‘Tudor Members Lounge’ to better reflect how it differs from our main external facing social media and encourage more interaction between members. You’ll see me posting in there a lot and if you use Facebook I hope you’ll join the group. Here’s the link.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1380997942212963/?ref=share

Whilst on the subject of social media here are the links to our main Facebook and Instagram accounts. Those of you that already follow these pages know it’s a great place to find wonderful pictures of the harbour and our members and news on upcoming events.

Local Shipwreck Discovery – 27th January

Martin Davies and Alison Mayor of Southsea Sub-Aqua Club have led numerous wreck investigation projects, many of which have a connection to the WW2 Allied invasion of Normandy.
This talk is about just one of the 7,000 ships and craft that was lost during Operation Neptune. The Southsea Sub-Aqua Club award winning project to investigate an unidentified wreck in the approaches to Portsmouth revealed a tragic story that had remained untold for nearly 70 years.
The talk will start at 7 pm, we will be serving mozzarella chicken with potatoes and veg from 6pm. Please book on WebCollect.

TSC Photographic Competition

Please keep your fabulous photographs coming in to tscmedia for this months competition.
You are welcome to resubmit pictures, the voting has been very close!

Please keep an eye on the social calendar and WebCollect as we will be adding to it very shortly.
We will be adding a galley training session very soon, and at the 2023 rate of £23, it’s not a bad way to get those duty hours completed!
Get sorting, as we will be having a boat jumble in April, so please let me know if you wish to have a table.
The galley will be open at lunch time this Sunday for some warming soup and bread if anyone is out on the water

Congratulations to Richard and Kathy Gunn

At the Annual General Meeting, retiring Commodore Richard Gunn and Kathy were granted by the members attending the meeting Honorary Life Membership of Tudor Sailing Club in recognition of all their service to the Club in leading roles over 28 years of membership. They served as Sailing Secretary, Social Committee, two separate periods of Commodore, and as Cruiser Captain. The Club has been very fortunate to have them undertake these key roles. The membership will all appreciate the last few years have been trying and testing for the Executive Committee requiring an extensive amount work being carried out behind the scenes to keep us safe with Covid requirements, and sea defence issues, not least the work put in by Richard. Richard and Kathy received a standing ovation.

New Flag Officers

Hi everybody,

If you weren’t at the AGM we’d like to let you know that Colin Thorpe, Rob Waring, and Jane Dare were elected Commodore, Vice-Commodore, and Rear Commodore at Sunday’s meeting. We’re busy getting up to speed this week, but we’re excited to be getting started in our new roles and will share more about what’s planned for the year in the coming weeks.

Glossing quickly over my error with the Tidal Diamond numbering last week, I will bring your attention to two attachments this week from NCI Gosport. The first is a summary of incidents they took part in over the past year (a notably increase over the previous year). The second is a piece on practicing man overboard drills. More detail on both of these can be found on the NCI Gosport blog at https://ncigosport.blogspot.com/.

Before signing off for another week I will include a link that may be of interest to those in Portsmouth. It is a survey on how communities connect with and value their marine environment. From the introduction:

“The UK is an island nation, surrounded by a rich and diverse ocean environment. The importance of a sustainable ocean for people and nature is now one of the defining issues of the early 21st Century alongside climate change and biodiversity loss.

As part of the UKRI funded Diverse Values project, we are interested in understanding how you connect with and value your local marine and coastal environment in and around Portsmouth and invite you to send us your thoughts about issues relating to the ocean and coast through completing this questionnaire.”

The survey can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/OLinPortsmouthNov22

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Applications Invited for Club Welfare Officer

Dear TSC members

We’re looking for a new Club Welfare Officer for Tudor Sailing Club. It’s an interesting role which plays an important part in making sure the club runs smoothly and safely, for both children and adults alike.

We would like to thank Gill Goodwin for her sterling work in this role and invite members to apply for this post. The Club Welfare Officer role is both rewarding AND would fully satisfy your club duty requirements.

I have attached the Job Description for the Club Welfare Officer together with our Child Protection Policy and Good Practice Guide. These documents should give you a good insight into the role.

If you’re interested in applying or would like to know more about the role then please contact Rob Waring by the end January at vicecommodore giving any relevant experience.

Maintenance Committee

Hi All Tudor Sailing Club members,

The current maintenance team have been in place for several years now, and willing as they are they could do with some new blood to replace those that are stepping down and to ease the burden of those remaining. The Tudor is a self help club, this ethos not only contributes to its great character but also keeps members subscriptions at sustainable levels. The club cannot operate safely and efficiently without a fully functional maintenance team, everything from keeping the water supply free of “Legionnaires Disease” through Gas, Fire and Electrical safety to CCTV, alarm and gate padlock security and on it goes… cutting grass, emptying the cess pit, etc etc etc. All these things we all take for granted have to be monitored and implemented as well as improvements to the infrastructure that are called for by the Executive. ”YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU”. You don’t have to be skilled in any particular way, just have an understanding of the real world and an attitude that “Gets things done”. We need a new lead Officer as well as at least 2 new committee members. It is a great way to influence decision making with affable people in a convivial atmosphere.

See you at the AGM. Very best regards Ian DuCane

Rowing News

Last Saturday the rowing section celebrated the Christmas festivities in their favourite way: rowing together and raising a glass (perhaps two) of fizz! The fleet of four gigs had a relaxed row to the harbour entrance and a stop for a drink on the way back at the Ferry Boat Inn. Eighteen people (many regular rowers but also some new faces) were out on the water on that sunny afternoon, and many others joined the group at the club for a joyful American supper. Steve Woodbridge patiently created a slideshow with more than a thousand photos collected during 2022 by all the rowers, a lovely way of going through some of the funniest moments that the last eventful year gave us.

Quite a few new members joined the rowing section this year, gaining more and more confidence with a sport new for them and eventually even taking part to some races; if you fancy keeping active and warm during the winter season, why don’t you join as well? A rich calendar of events is ready and there are plenty of social and friendly activities suitable for all abilities and levels of experience; drop an email to: rowing.

Hi everyone…. A dedicated marketing email is now up and running, so when you want to get involved (or you want me to get involved) you can always contact me at marketing

Atlantic Row update

Last week I posted all the various ways to follow club member Kevin Watkins epic rowing adventure for charity.

Dot Watchers; the 2022 race is now loaded and live and they set off at mid morning Monday 12th. Watch all the teams progress on the YB app by searching for Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

YouTube update

As mentioned last week, in January the club will be launching official YouTube content. This will be a place for prospective and existing members to visit and the content will range from informative to uplifting and be a place to advertise who we are and what we offer.

I’m delighted so many are already volunteering to be part of a montage about our fabulous club. It’s been fun hearing the ideas you’ve all got. It’s not too late to be part of it. I won’t be starting work on it until January, so please do contact me on the email address or via WhatsApp if you’ve got me added. If you’ve already volunteered I’ll be in touch in January.

New(ish) members

At the end of January, Steve Woodbridge (our membership secretary) and I will be launching a survey for new(ish) members. We want to hear about your initial experiences with the club from … how you heard about us, how you found our website information, right through to those initial months when you didn’t know your web-collect from your boat bookings ? we’ve all been there … The results will allow us to map your journey end to end and enhance the experience for those that follow. Of course, if you’re a long time member and, unlike me, have a great memory you are also welcome to complete the survey and input your ideas. Look out for the survey link here in TD during January.

I’ve rabbited on again. I’ll be quiet next week ?

Sailing Update

Thank you to all the members who took time to complete the survey I sent out a couple of weeks ago.

It was great to see that 87% of responses received were happy with the amount of opportunities to get out on the water last year. There was some other great feedback which we are working on incorporating into the calendar and non-sailing related items have been passed onto the relevant person. One item that came up several times was cruiser cruise calendar, the sailing committee would love to schedule some events like this but we are currently without a permanent cruiser captain to organise. If you have a cruiser and would like to step up and get cruisers cruising in company again then please drop Mark Swallow a line.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY!

The 2023 regatta is provisionally scheduled for 2nd and 3rd September, so put this in your diary now. We are looking at changing the program so that more racing starts from the club to give spectators something to watch, which was feedback received from the survey.

A couple of bits of admin, if that’s the right term, this week:

  • Maintenance – don’t forget that you need to complete your maintenance hours before renewals. One opportunity that I am currently aware of is for some ‘simple’ jobs that need doing on Bruce (the committee boat). For more details contact the Sailing Secretary at sailingsec
  • Something else that needs to be completed soon (if you need to do it) is jet washing of cruisers. The deadline for this is the end of the year.
  • I’ll also give another reminder of the AGM on 8th January (see below).
