Maintenance Update

Slip Cleaning

There are 4 positions on the Slip cleaning crew that reports to the Bosun. The task is to keep the slipway clear and safe to use. Maintenance forms are not required as this task like grass cutting and window cleaning are set tasks. The chains on the slip belong to the Maintenance people.

The slip is normally swept using the rubber scrapers that are kept at the top of the slip on a falling tide. This is usually the last hour or two of the tide to carry the silt with it. If the slipway is heavily silted we have the use of the small tractor with the scraper on the back.

We have a WhatsApp group to keep in touch as it’s easier to do slip cleaning in company.

Social Media Update

WhatsApp and TSC

Hi everyone,

WhatsApp continues to grow as a popular and efficient method of communication for our club community and whilst we don’t have any formal responsibility for the content, we do expect members to adhere to guidelines when conducting TSC business.

A document outlining our approach is available now within our club website ‘Useful Documents’ section. It’s currently filed under ‘Other Sailing Committee Documents’. Here’s the link:

https://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/?r=/05_sailing/documents/body.php

In summary, all members should treat each other with courtesy and respect, just as they would face to face. Below are the truncated guidelines but please do take the time to read the whole document. As always Colin, Rob, and I are available to answer questions.

Truncated WhatsApp Guidance

  • The function of our WhatsApp groups is to let members know what’s happening on the water and socially at the club, sharing useful information, asking for advice.
  • Be kind, respectful, and courteous. This is a space for everyone to enjoy what the club has to offer. Let’s create a welcoming environment.
  • Healthy debates are natural, but respect and kindness are required.
  • Please keep posts short and on point.
  • On no account should members stray into discussing politics, religion, or other potentially controversial topics.
  • Respect everyone’s privacy. Being part of a group requires mutual trust. What’s shared in the group should stay in the group.
  • Self-promotion, spam, and irrelevant links are not permitted.
  • Non-adherence to the code may result in a member being removed from the club WhatsApp groups.

Tudor Members Lounge on Facebook

A reminder that we have a closed Facebook group called Tudor Members Lounge.

It’s a great place to stay updated on social events and on the water activities at the club. Plus you can ask advice or chat to other members there.

Here’s the link again, please do join if you use Facebook.

Going forward we’ll put the link in the useful links section of Tidal Diamond.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1380997942212963/

New Members WhatsApp group

We’ve just revamped our WhatsApp group for new members and going forward all new members will be invited to join the chat while they find their sea legs around and about Tudor. It’s a chat that will have a constant flow of new members coming and going. If you are new to Tudor in the last few months, still finding your way round, and would like to join please do get in touch with me.

Another busy edition this week, which bodes well for a busy season ahead (not to mention the last few weeks before launch, or is that just me?!). There’s a For Sale ad below, but having missed it out last week I can include a link to a News article on Kite Foyling championships that will be happening off Eastney beach (thankfully in September so I’m still early with the information). Details at: https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/business/worlds-best-kite-foil-athletes-to-compete-off-the-coast-of-eastney-beach-for-a-shot-at-paris-2024-4032481

If you’ve got this far and not noted the courses we have on offer, skip back up to the top and take another look. First Aid and VHF are two important safety areas when sailing, so the offer of RYA courses at the club is well worth taking advantage of.

Rowing Update

Why not try Gig or Sliding Seat Rowing

The rowing section hold weekly introduction sessions every Saturday morning for both gig and sliding seat rowing. These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rowers individual ability and are great fun. With the better weather fast approaching now is the ideal time to give rowing a go. Please email me at rowing if you would like to book a session.

Tudor rowing handicap calculations to be adopted by other event organisers

Thanks to some great work done by Martino Pani (a lecturer at Portsmouth University) in calculating rowing boat handicaps for last years Tudor Challenge, it has been agreed these calculations (which are based on the water line length of the boat) will be adopted for this seasons Round Hayling Rowing Race and the Cockleshell Challenge. It is hoped that in time these calculations will be used more widely at other rowing event organisers across the 3 harbours area and an initial meeting is to be hosted at Tudor where these will be presented to representatives from the various rowing groups. Well done Martino!

Cruiser Update

Communications – Cruiser WhatsApp Group

I would like to encourage all cruiser owners and cruising members to join our cruiser WhatsApp group ‘TSC Cruises’. It’s a great way to share and receive useful cruiser-related information, ask questions, post photos from your trip etc, as well as enabling members to chat about potential cruises in company. For example, last season I found it really helpful for getting into Ryde Harbour as members were able to describe the location of the entrance channel (which was not where the buoys were!) and post photos showing the exact location of the sand bars that had built up in the entrance. More recent discussions have included useful information relating to the recently-discontinued Calor Gas bottles that some of us use.

We have a wonderful, diverse cruising community at Tudor and this group is a great way for us all to stay connected. To join, please email me at cruisers with your name, phone number and boat name and I’ll add you to the group. You just need to ensure that you have WhatsApp installed on your mobile phone.

Lift-in preparations

It’s great to see the weather warming up and activity in the compound increasing as we get ready for lift-in on the weekend of 1st & 2nd April. That’s less than 6 weeks away so don’t forget to schedule in enough time for those crucial jobs like checking/maintaining your mooring on a suitable tide and servicing your engine and ensuring it runs. Feel free to ask on the cruiser WhatsApp group if you’d find advice from other cruiser owners helpful.

Disposal of Flares

If you have out of date flares, HM Coastguard can no longer dispose of these for you. A list of companies that will accept time expired pyrotechnics can be found on: https://thegreenblue.org.uk/environmental-facilities-map/

Ebb & Flow

Well that’s a packed Tidal Diamond. I had a few items ready to fit into this section. First was on flare disposal – covered above by Nicola. Second was the value of the WhatsApp groups as the flares issue was discussed on the cruiser one prior to reaching here – covered above by Kat. I can add that we have a selection of groups for the different club activities, you can find details at the bottom of the Diary Dates section.

I can be first with the fact that there is a new edition of Chart BA3418 (Langstone and Chichester Harbours) due for publication on 13th April ’23. Up-to-date survey data has been incorporated reducing minimum depths in the Broom Channel, mooring area by the Mulberry and Bedhampton Channel. If you are about to purchase a new chart you may like to hold off and make sure you get the latest one.

I will finish off with a reminder in big red letters again. By the time the next Tidal Diamond is sent it will be too late!

New Members Survey

Closes 20 February

Hi everyone.

Thank you again to everyone that has completed this survey. The survey closes on the 20th February, so just a few days left to add your thoughts. Steve Woodbridge and I will be reviewing your comments and recommendations during the end of February and we’ll keep you updated on changes to both the membership process and the early months as a club member. I’m confident some of the changes, particularly around finding information, will benefit us all.

Cruiser Captain

We’re delighted to announce that Kat Robinson has been unanimously elected Cruiser Captain by the Cruiser Section.

From Kat:

I’m looking forward to another great season afloat. Over my years at Tudor I’ve progressed from single-handing a 20’ Alacrity, to introducing my now-husband to sailing a 25’ Jaguar, to buying our current 29’ Westerly Konsort ten years ago, to accommodate our 3 growing (now grown) children.

I’d like to help club members join in with all that Tudor has to offer, especially by improving communications and better connecting members in our wonderful cruising community.

Two things to fit in to this section before sending. Firstly, from the Stundland Bay Marine Partnership Update for February 2023 is attached, which is useful information if you are likely to be sailing there in the coming season (or even if you are just interested):

Good morning

I am writing on behalf of the Studland Bay Marine Partnership to keep your members informed of progress and the current situation.

I attach a release that has been prepared by Dorset Coast Forum on behalf of the “boaters” which I would ask you to post on your notice board and, if possible, include a link on your member newsletters and on your website as this information provides the current and coming season situation to the many hundreds of boaters who visit Studland Bay each year, many in transit.

As one of the two boaters who sit on the Partnership, together with a RYA representative, I feel that the many contributors are now “pulling together” whereas, at the beginning, there were numerous different agendas. Your members can be assured that we strongly represent the boaters interests so that we may all continue to enjoy Studland Bay.

Kind regards
Jim Atkins
Studland Bay Marine Partnership and Christchurch Sailing Club

Secondly, and likely of more immediate importance, a quick reminder that membership renewals are due by 28th February, so you have two weeks left. If you are having problems do let the club know. I’ll just repeat that important information in larger letters before signing off, just to be sure:

Membership Renewals due by 28th February – that’s two weeks.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Rowing Update

Sliding Seat Rowing

Tudor have acquired two sliding seat boats which the club will be trialling for a 3 month period. During the trial period these boats will be available for all club members to try out under supervision, and regular rowing slots have been scheduled for 11am on Saturday mornings. These rowing slots will need to be prebooked and initially only two slots will be available each week. If you would like to give sliding seat rowing a go and book a slot then please email me at rowing.

Introduction to Gig rowing

The rowing section hold regular introduction rows every Saturday at 11am, where you can give gig rowing a go. These 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rowers individual ability and are always great fun. With the better weather fast approaching now is the ideal time to try gig rowing. Please email me at rowing if you would like to book one of these sessions.

Thank You.

Video and Pictures – keep ’em coming

The pictures and video you’ve sent so far tell an uplifting, vibrant story for our club. We plan to use all of it across this year to celebrate you and our Tudor community. As Spring peeps out please continue to snap and film. It only needs to be a few seconds and it can be on the water, prepping boats, in the bar afterwards. Everything can be sent to me via email or WhatsApp and it’s all appreciated.

Rowing News

Last Saturday morning the adventurous rowers decided to try a different place for their weekly breakfast together, and to stretch their shoulders a bit. The sea and weather conditions were mild and favourable: light northerly wind, raising tide, no rain, so off they went to Emsworth! Due to water constrains, the fleet of five gigs (22 rowers) went to Northney via Langston channel, receiving a big help from the tide that pushed them up from Sword Point to Bridge in no time. Once they arrived at the South Cardinal marking the entrance of the Emsworth channel, the gigs headed up north and landed at the slipway at Emsworth harbour. A few swans inquisitively observed the rowers while they were having their refreshments and a small celebration (happy birthday Denise!), and were relieved to have their spot on the slipway back once the group left. On the way back to TSC, two gigs engaged in a small race and, to the surprise of the crews, two kayakers from a nearby club joined in, keeping up with the boats for quite a distance and looking forward to seeing them again next Saturday for another joint row together.

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing, new people are always welcome!

Plenty of news this week, so after one of those days I will leave you with some stunningly useful information for those cruiser owners safely ashore in the compound from one of today’s KHM LNtM, and that is that the Horse Sand Forst is unlit. OK, so perhaps more use for some adventurous dinghy sailors, or our hardy rowers than us hight and dry cruiser owners. More details at:

https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/KHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/Navigational-Warnings/2023/2313.

On the subject of cruiser owners, it may well just be worth a reminder that the launch weekend is 1st and 2nd April, so no fooling around, time is ticking (he says as much to himself as the rest of the membership!

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Marketing Videos and Pictures for the Club – keep ’em coming

Hi everyone,

Just a gentle nudge as it’s not quite so cold out there, when you’re at the club or on the water, don’t forget to take a selfie or a quick video snippet for our club marketing videos.

Informal, fun, working on boats, sailing, rowing, etc be as creative as you like.

Getting together for social events at the club? Why not raise a glass to the camera and just say hi? As many pictures of you as possible would be fantastic.

Don’t worry if you’re not at the club, you’re the stars of the club ?? so any background is fine.

We’ve got a WhatsApp group for questions and if you’d like to join it just let me know.

If you don’t use WhatsApp that’s fine as I’m available on the email below.

If you don’t want to be in a video or picture that’s fine too as we want to showcase snippets of your adventures on the water too. A gaggle of geese flew directly over us last week but sadly I wasn’t quick enough. There’s so much opportunity out there.

Thanks everyone,

Jane Dare

New(ish) Members (and those with a good memory).

Calling all new(ish) members.

And, as our strength is in our community, we’d like your input. Please click on the link below which will take you to a short survey. It won’t take more than 5 minutes to complete and your answers and comments will be anonymous. The survey will be available until Monday 20th February.

Your input is really appreciated and will enable us to update and enhance the experience of finding our club, joining our club, and the early weeks of membership.

Even if you’re not a new member, you are very welcome to complete the survey if you want to contribute to improving the experience for prospective and new members.

This Sunday is Icicle Series 3 starting at 11am from the club line. The weather gods look like they might be smiling down this time (fingers crossed) so please come down and join in.

The first race of the series was blown off due to high winds. The second race was a chilly drift with one boat sailing faster backwards than forwards and another with chunks of ice sliding over the side on each roll tack.

Tudor Rower Conquers the Atlantic

Kevin Watkins who learnt to row with Tudor completed the challenge of a lifetime when he arrived at Nelsons Dock, Antigua in the early hours of Thursday morning (UK time) last week.

Kevin, Gemma Best and Adam Siggs (Team Raring to Row) left La Gomera in Canary Islands on the 12 December together with 42 other crews as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2022 and rowed the 3000 miles to Antigua finishing 44 days, 11 hours and 39 minutes later having battled with extreme weather conditions during the race.

Kevin said ……

“In completing the challenge team Raring to Row have so far raised £33,816 for Action Medical Research a leading UK wide charity which funds research into rare childhood diseases.Tudor Rowers helped support this very worthwhile cause last summer when they raised over £3000 doing a 24hr sponsored row. If you would like to support this very worthwhile cause and show your support for Kevin then there is still time to make a donation on the teams just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/raringtorow“.

Congratulations Kevin, Gemma and Adam for a job well done!

Ebb & Flow

Another busy Tidal Diamond this week, which is great to have at this time of year. I’m tempted to keep some content for this section next week, but I shall throw caution to the wind and trust something will turn up in time!

Firstly something I’ve picked up both from the KHM Twitter feed, and direct from the KHM at the Dockyard Port Forum this morning. There is a new Small Craft Guide which can be downloaded from https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/-/media/khm/portsmouth/documents/22_0762_qhm-portsmouth-publication_a4-digital.pdf?la=en-gb&rev=08424ec508f44f498705634f94b7bb51&hash=BBB0E08DBA963B0065DDC718435ECE8D (that’s a URL and a half!). They are keen to get this out there as it is not just a rebranding (quite a large exercise to just replace a Q with a K), but it also clarifies how to enter and leave Portsmouth Harbour. With the safety requirements to cope with ferries, Naval vessels and small pleasure craft of different types it isn’t necessarily that obvious, so do take a look.

Secondly, and this has come to my from multiple directions, and I have included it in the past as well. It bears repeating though, and that is the issue of Cold Water Shock – which isn’t just a winter thing. The RYA have an article and video available at: https://www.rya.org.uk/blog/cold-shocking-truth. Being informed may just save your life (he types, wondering if he should lighten the mood before finishing now).

To round off then, I will just encourage you to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard or touch screen, and write something about being new to the club. Having joined in 1968 I’m not sure as I class as new, even with an ish, and even with a good memory, was a tiny be young to remember much – maybe I can find an angle there!

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Local Shipwreck Discovery – This Friday 27th January

Martin Davies and Alison Mayor of Southsea Sub-Aqua Club have led numerous wreck investigation projects, many of which have a connection to the WW2 Allied invasion of Normandy.

This talk is about just one of the 7,000 ships and craft that was lost during Operation Neptune. The Southsea Sub-Aqua Club award winning project to investigate an unidentified wreck in the approaches to Portsmouth revealed a tragic story that had remained untold for nearly 70 years.

Drone Footage of the Club

Hi everyone,

As part of the plan to have video of our club and harbour for YouTube you’ll occasionally notice a drone flying around the slipway and into Broom. This will continue as the weather improves.

You’ll never be in a close up on this particular footage but we would like to include aerial footage of all the club has to offer when boats and kayaks are on the water.

If anyone has a concern with an aerial shot of them on the slipway, or at sea being used on YouTube please contact me privately. It’s highly unlikely your face will ever be identifiable, but obviously we plan to respect your privacy.

Atlantic Row Update

For those following the Atlantic Challenge this year and Tudor club member Kevin Watkins, team Raring to Row is nearing the finish line. YB tracking currently has an estimated finish of the 26th January and at the time of writing (Monday evening) the team has less than 150 miles to go. 21 amazing teams have finished so far with plenty of new world records set. Raring to Row is next to finish. Kevin’s team mate Gemma Best is about to make history by being the first woman to row the Atlantic Ocean twice. It’s been an amazing journey for them ranging from dolphins to wrecked hands, rogue waves, barnacles and broken toilet buckets. Follow the finish on live stream (and catch up) on the Atlantic Campaigns Facebook page or watch on the Atlantic Campaigns YouTube channel. There’s plenty of amazing footage and photos.

Go Kev!

It looks as though 2023 is getting off to a flying start, or am in in the wrong type of club there – perhaps the drone footage will cover the flying! The social calendar is filling up already, and the full programme hasn’t been published yet. On the water activities are being kept alive by the rowing section. On one hand I don’t envy them out there in the current temperatures, on the other hand I’d probably rather be on the water that under my boat preparing for launch (which to be fair I haven’t been doing either). Whatever your particular club activity, or activities, the signs are it is going to be a good year, so watch out for your renewal emails and don’t forget to get them sorted. If you are having problems with them let us know in plenty of time to get things sorted.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Exec Introductions

Commodore – Colin Thorpe

Firstly, thank you for trusting me to be Commodore for the next 2 years. I very much appreciate the support that people have given me over the last week or so.

I’d also like to reiterate the thanks given to Richard and Cathy at the AGM for the massive amount of work done by them over their time at the club. A tough act to follow!

I joined Tudor in 1995 as a novice dinghy sailor, and then bought a cruiser with my wife in 2002. I also occasionally row and paddle. I’ve been involved with small businesses and charities for many years, and so hopefully know my way around what’s need to keep Tudor compliant and safe.

It’s an exciting time at Tudor, with an ever-growing range of activities to get involved with. I hope to help members make the very best of all that we have to offer, whether that’s having a go at a new activity or coming down to the clubhouse for a drink with friends. We’ve already started to look at how we can make each activity more accessible for people to try, how to support new members, and how best to co-ordinate on-the-water and shore-side activities.

Please do always get in touch with any feedback or suggestions.

Vice Commodore – Rob Waring

Hi,

I’m been a member at TSC for around 25 years and currently own SEQUIN, a Sadler 25. You may know me from our vocal Jack Russell who accompanies us every time we go afloat. He really is pleased to see everyone… honestly?

I’m really pleased to serve you as Vice Commodore for another year and look forward to a great 2023 where I hope as individuals and as a club we can continue to prosper.

The Exec is developing some new initiatives for the club to help it grow and become an even better place to be and we’ll keep you informed of progress. As always we’ll need your help and support.

All the best for a great season.

Rear Commodore – Jane Dare

Hi everybody

In keeping with the introductions above, and in case you weren’t at the AGM earlier this month, here’s a little about me.

Some of you will know me as I was previously the Rowing Captain. Rowing is my main passion at the club (I co-own the gig Friendship with four fabulous friends) but I also Kayak and plan to learn Dinghy sailing this year. I’m sure you’ll see me out there falling in … a lot.

My background is twenty five years in a corporate life holding project management and people management positions across HR, Recruitment, professional development, and Marketing. About seven years ago I left (for a quiet life) and now own and run a small business.

I believe Tudor has not only the most fantastic facilities and access to a beautiful harbour, but importantly THE best people with a wealth of knowledge, experience and friendliness, and I’m excited to help harness all of that and enable each of you to get the most from being a member of Tudor across all our water and social activities.

Local Shipwreck Discovery – 27th January

Martin Davies and Alison Mayor of Southsea Sub-Aqua Club have led numerous wreck investigation projects, many of which have a connection to the WW2 Allied invasion of Normandy.

This talk is about just one of the 7,000 ships and craft that was lost during Operation Neptune. The Southsea Sub-Aqua Club award winning project to investigate an unidentified wreck in the approaches to Portsmouth revealed a tragic story that had remained untold for nearly 70 years.

The talk will start at 7 pm, we will be serving mozzarella chicken with potatoes and veg from 6pm and have a vegetarian option. Please book on WebCollect.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/local-shipwreck-discovery

Please keep your eyes on the social calendar we have games nights planned, more talks, a boat jumble, a cocktail evening, curry and quiz evenings and the bar will be open during the six nations rugby.

Rowing Update

Last Sunday TSC hosted the first race of the Tudor Winter Trophy series, a set of three short and sharp sprints within the harbour. Six gigs, all with mixed crews, took part in the race: from the club start line, down the Broom channel, around South Salterns and then back to the club.

The wind was quite intense, but the low tide helped to keep the boats sheltered from the wind. The first crew crossed the finish line after 24 minutes, and all the others followed closely. The rowers (and the supporters) then had a warm soup and a drink in the clubhouse, buzzing for the first race and looking forward already to the next one!

The Hamble River Rowing came along with a team and some supporters, and their captain Amanda, long time friend with the TSC rowers, said: “The first race of the Winter Cup was a great start to the New Year- not too long! The sun was a welcome sight, after all the recent wind and rain. As ever, we were made to feel very welcome by Tudor’s rowing section and the hot soup afterwards was the perfect way to warm up. Thank you Tudor!”

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing, new people are always welcome!

Marketing Update

Promo Video

Hi everyone, lots of bits to update you on and let’s start with a great opportunity to have some fun. As I mentioned back in December we plan to launch an official YouTube channel for the club and to kick this off we’re creating two videos.

The first will be a promotional video featuring lots of fun footage and pictures from all of you. This video will be used to showcase our club internally and externally and represent all the water and social activities we offer. Many of you have already signed up to be part of this.Thank you, it’s really exciting to see everyone coming together to have fun . There’s still time to put your hand up too.

So, ways to get involved …

If you’ve already told me you’ll be involved I’ll be adding you to a ‘promo’ WhatsApp group over the next few days. Full instructions on what to do will be given there. It’ll be really simple and you’ll be able to complete at home, at the club, on the water, anywhere you fancy.

If you’d like to be involved, please let me know via WhatsApp or on the email below. Everybody welcome.

If you’d like to be involved but don’t use WhatsApp, that’s OK too, I can send instructions via email. Just contact me on the email address below.

I’m delighted so many are already volunteering to be part of a montage about our fabulous club. It’s been fun hearing the ideas you’ve all got. It’s not too late to be part of it.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is on March 8th. In previous years we’ve had a TSC tribute to our awesome women members on Facebook. This year we’re going up a gear to celebrate you all and encourage more women to join us and feel empowered on the water.

The plan is to make a video from your pictures and video snippets. The video will be used on our social media and be available on YouTube. It will be shown at our open days and used in recruitment programmes. It will only take minimal effort I promise and I hope will be really fun to do on and off the water.

Here’s how to get involved…

If you’ve already told me you’ll be involved I’ll be adding you to the ‘IWD’ WhatsApp group over the next few days. Full instructions on what to do will be given there. It will be easy to do and you’ll be able to complete it anywhere you fancy and join up with other women if you prefer.

If you’d like to be involved, please let me know via WhatsApp or on the email below.

If you’d like to be involved but don’t use WhatsApp, that’s ok too, I can send instructions via email. Just contact me on the email address below.

We have an amazing community and a great opportunity to celebrate each other and inspire women of all ages to get on the water.

Tudor Members Lounge on Facebook

Did you know there’s a TSC closed Facebook group called Past and Present? The beauty of this group is that it’s a closed community where you can chat about the club, ask questions, advertise your social events on and off the water etc. It’s definitely not used enough, so we’re relaunching it in the coming days as the ‘Tudor Members Lounge’ to better reflect how it differs from our main external facing social media and encourage more interaction between members. You’ll see me posting in there a lot and if you use Facebook I hope you’ll join the group. Here’s the link.

Whilst on the subject of social media here are the links to our main Facebook and Instagram accounts. Those of you that already follow these pages know it’s a great place to find wonderful pictures of the harbour and our members and news on upcoming events.

Congratulations to Richard and Kathy Gunn

At the Annual General Meeting, retiring Commodore Richard Gunn and Kathy were granted by the members attending the meeting Honorary Life Membership of Tudor Sailing Club in recognition of all their service to the Club in leading roles over 28 years of membership. They served as Sailing Secretary, Social Committee, two separate periods of Commodore, and as Cruiser Captain. The Club has been very fortunate to have them undertake these key roles. The membership will all appreciate the last few years have been trying and testing for the Executive Committee requiring an extensive amount work being carried out behind the scenes to keep us safe with Covid requirements, and sea defence issues, not least the work put in by Richard. Richard and Kathy received a standing ovation.

New Flag Officers

Hi everybody,

If you weren’t at the AGM we’d like to let you know that Colin Thorpe, Rob Waring, and Jane Dare were elected Commodore, Vice-Commodore, and Rear Commodore at Sunday’s meeting. We’re busy getting up to speed this week, but we’re excited to be getting started in our new roles and will share more about what’s planned for the year in the coming weeks.

Glossing quickly over my error with the Tidal Diamond numbering last week, I will bring your attention to two attachments this week from NCI Gosport. The first is a summary of incidents they took part in over the past year (a notably increase over the previous year). The second is a piece on practicing man overboard drills. More detail on both of these can be found on the NCI Gosport blog at https://ncigosport.blogspot.com/.

Before signing off for another week I will include a link that may be of interest to those in Portsmouth. It is a survey on how communities connect with and value their marine environment. From the introduction:

“The UK is an island nation, surrounded by a rich and diverse ocean environment. The importance of a sustainable ocean for people and nature is now one of the defining issues of the early 21st Century alongside climate change and biodiversity loss.

As part of the UKRI funded Diverse Values project, we are interested in understanding how you connect with and value your local marine and coastal environment in and around Portsmouth and invite you to send us your thoughts about issues relating to the ocean and coast through completing this questionnaire.”

The survey can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/OLinPortsmouthNov22
