PSTT Update: Summer School Term 2022

Explore the latest updates from the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, where we share inspiring stories, important announcements and celebrate successes.

PSTT Update: Summer School Term 2022

This school term Portsmouth Sail Training Trust has achieved so much.

We’ve partnered with Trafalgar Wharf to help offer our participants insight into many of the potential career opportunities within the UK’s marine sector. So far our participants have had 3 tours. From the Shipyard and Drystack to Boat Club Trafalgar and RIBs For Sale there was plenty to show and tell on their recent tours of Trafalgar Wharf.  We’re working together with Trafalgar Wharf to offer work experience opportunities for the sailors.

During this school term, 40 of our participants have completed their RYA First Aid courses. This is an incredibly useful course, teaching our students all about first aid from a boating perspective. It is also a key qualification for a career in watersports!

Our participants had an amazing time for the opening ceremony of the Sea Angling Classic in Portsmouth.  A group of our participants took part in the flag parade as flag bearers for the event! They also got to head out onto the water for the boat parade and to watch the start of the competition. Decathlon Portsmouth also provided our participants with some lovely new branded tops!

It’s a great way to get to know each other. If you haven’t rowed before or are relatively new, that is no problem, everyone is welcome to come along, even if it’s just to watch and have something to eat.

There is a trophy to be won, but more importantly who will win the coveted wooden spoon?

Please pre book food. We will be serving chilli and rice.

Sword Sands Family Day – 30th July

Let’s all make the most of having our own island so close by and spend the afternoon on Sword Sands enjoying the sun, sand and sea.

Bring along your footballs, frisbees, your badminton racquets etc, along with your suntan lotion and a picnic. The main thing is to bring yourselves and your friends and family along.

You can now also hire the BBQ for only £15.

We do ask that you give it a really good clean after use please, ready for the next person, or if you prefer we can sort out the cleaning for you at a cost of £36.

Club Marketing

Thank you to everyone that’s been sharing social media posts and spreading the word about all things Tudor. It’s great to see our presence in the harbour and community flourishing.

You will start to notice a few new logos on our social media. As you’ve already seen with the rowing section previously, we continue to build a brand of logos that sit under our familiar TSC burgee and help to showcase each water activity we offer as well as the overall club. They’ve been designed with impact and clarity in mind, specifically for use in social media, marketing materials, and clothing. Teamwork and collaboration is always a strength at the club, so thank you to everyone that is involved, with special credit to Martino Pani, Will Coleman, Dani Brain, and Hannah Barnes for their upcoming Tudor Cadets and Women on Water section logos.

The club is happy for you to use these logos and share to advertise TSC, but naturally your content should be related to activities we offer at Tudor. Please don’t change or play with the logo in any way. A heads up to me would be appreciated if you plan to use the logo to ensure the visual of our club stays on point and relevant, and naturally we’d like to use footage from you budding filmmakers on our official channel too so please get in touch.

Cruiser Update

Tudor’s cruisers have been enjoying this run of lovely breezy, sunny weather by getting out and about. We heard that the north-easterlies haven’t been so much fun for members visiting France, with lumpy sea conditions there making life rather uncomfortable. Over here, our WhatsApp group contains tales of members’ recent trips to (among other destinations, no doubt) Studland, Newport, Island Harbour, Folly, Cowes, Lymington, Ryde and Chichester. Last weekend several cruisers met up and enjoyed socialising in Newport: Kelly Semmens writes “The crews of Holly and Dream On were island bound on Friday morning, heading to Newport on the Isle of Wight. After a little bit of floundering in the Solent, we made our way up the Medina to meet with the crew of Goodyear who were ready with welcome drinks to re-hydrate us all. They have dredged the harbour but not right up to the pontoon, as Holly discovered as she settled on a slight slant. A weekend full of fun, lots of laughs and plenty of sunshine. A fabulous time was enjoyed by all.” The picture collage shows some of the fun they had!

Please do keep contributing to the Cruiser WhatsApp group when you’re out and about – it’s great to see and hear what everyone’s up to. Don’t forget you can use the Cruiser Calendar here to help plan trips with others, and also to look for crew or crewing opportunities. If you’re a cruising member who’s not already in the WhatsApp group, please email me with your name, mobile number and cruiser name (for info) to join. There’s also a Cruiser Racing WhatsApp Group.

Cockleshell Challenge

Hi All Tudor members,

Last Sunday saw the 5th. annual ECA 9 mile round the Fort “Cockleshell” rowing Challenge (the race is in honour of the Cockleshell heroes who trained on these shores). This is a very important race in the Tudor rowing calendar as it was the first rowing race that Tudor entered (with Rosie) some 5 years ago, we won it then and the subsequent 2 races, last year we were just beaten by the “Lewis” pilot gig crew. The competition from the 22 boat fleet was fierce with the venomous calls of coxswain shouting “Pull” filling the air. However in spite of their best efforts the overwhelming power of our Tudor rowers triumphed against all-comers by winning all of the trophies on offer.

Fastest overall on handicap “Freedom” …..Fastest Bursledon Gig “Freedom”….. Fastest ladies “Friendship” ……Fastest mixed crew “Orange Peel”.

There were other categories such as fastest Pilot Gig, fastest Celtic longboat, Fastest Solent Galley but these obviously don’t apply to us but important to remember that when all the handicaps were applied our crews swept the board.

For information there was a “Race within this race” between our boats Freedom and Navigator. These 2 crews are extremely well matched (and determined) with both their calculated rowing efficiencies being some 95%. I wager it is near impossible to drive these boats faster than we do, particularly over long distance, we ran neck and neck for the whole race. Under these conditions where boats are alongside or within just one or two lengths of each other at any given time the rowing battle becomes one of outright attrition with both crews hurling in every thing they have to gain advantage. The slightest error by the rowers or the cox can be decisive. Calling on full crew discipline and concentration, the outcome of this 2 boat battle means we left the whole of the rest of the fleet way behind and clipped approximately 10 minutes off previous best time, in the end Freedom just pipped Navigator by 20 seconds, an extremely small margin after one and a half hours of outright “mental and physical torture”?, hence the very true old adage “you become better by working with the best”.

The ECA always have the best hospitality and their organisation coupled with good weather and sea conditions made It a great race day with great people enjoyed by all, made even better by the cheering on from friends and family ashore with Richard and Yvonne Adams and crew of Pluto providing on the water support. We were surprised to suddenly hear cheering as we came down on the fort.

Round Hayling Cruise

Saturday 10 June

Forecast – NE veering to SE, 8-14kts

7 crews and a swashbuckling, dashing, courageous single-hander adventurer (me) assembled outside the club lounge at 0945 sharp(ish) to receive a thorough briefing from our intrepid organiser, Neil Boyce, about the perils that lay in wait for us as we contemplated the 14 treacherous miles of tides, sandbars, mud flats, navigation marks, harbour entrances and the infamous Hayling bridge.

With, amazingly, no one backing out in the face of such odds, we rigged up and headed down the slipway, slower boats first. I was in my wetsuit as I suspected I might be swimming the club’s Topper Topaz under the bridge, and because I’m getting a name amongst the dinghy community for capsizing every time I go afloat, so had a reputation to uphold. Mark & Nicola led the way in the club Wanderer, followed by me and Mike & Clare in the first of four magnificent Wayfarer entries. The tide was low and the wind was showing southerly tendencies even as we set sail, so some tacking (past 12 unfazed, hauled-out seals) in the narrow channel was necessary before we reached the eastern edge of Russell’s Lake.

At this point, M&N decided to head for a sandbank for a pause (neither lost nor an early lunch, it seems), handing me the lead (it’s not a race, Rupert) to lead the flotilla out through The Race and on to the High Seas. M&C soon zipped by upwind and, to make them feel better, I decided literally to test the water once more and capsize when I forgot about the main sheet jammer on this boat. A concerned Paul & Ian hovered nearby in a patrol boat but were soon back off on shepherding duties.

Annoyed at having relinquished my lead (it’s not a race, R), I set off in pursuit of M&C, as all the boats transited the Langstone Harbour entrance. Neil & Anita were next on Wayfarer Sanderling, with Russell & Laurie on club WYSIWYG, Declan and Fabia on the fourth Wanderer and Ian & Dave in a GP playing tail-end Charlie (though the new, immaculately white sails and bright PFDs meant there was no chance they would ever be lost from view).

Taking the inside line close to shore (in contradiction to Neil’s advice, soz), I snuck inside M&C and got to the Chichester Bar mark first (it’s not a r, R), then lurked around as the rest of the convoy assembled. The wind at our end of the island was quite energetic from the SE as the sea breeze kicked in but it had yet to fill at the far end, so we started out on a slow broad reach/run into Chichester Harbour…just as LITERALLY a MILLION boats left HISC for the day’s racing. Lasers, Finns, Europes, Devotis, RS-everythings, 29ers, Optimists, unnamed things with trapezes, you name it, it swarmed out to sea. I furled my jib to get a better view (we were at least entering on starboard) but still had a close encounter with an RS Elite and its 3 crew as they exited my blind spot, with right of way to boot (see pic).

Without too much shouting and no collisions, we curled around the back of the club and hauled up on the (very steeply shelving – another swim for me!) shore for lunch. Out came the picnic blankets and provisions as we scoffed our various self-prepared feasts, while keeping an eye on the rapidly-rising tide line. Enplumpened, I went off for 30 minutes more sailing in the harbour, the damage of the supremely uncomfortable gunwale seating of the Topaz having already rendered me insouciant of the pain in my rear end, and to be in pole position for the restart (it’s nar,R).

With a fair wind and flooding tide, we whizzed off up the channel on the eastern flank of HI (Hayling Island, not Hawaii), with 4 more seals added to the list. As inar, R, I tried to get ye olde Topaz planing with broad reaches back and forth across the channel, allowing the current to do some of the VMG work for me and some of the others to pass. Resisting the temptation of ice cream in Emsworth, we proceeded west towards the top of HI, towards…the bridge of doom! Everyone dropped their masts and rowed under the bridge except for me, who went ashore, capsized the boat (deliberately, this time) and guided it between the supports in waist-deep water. Past the annoyingly-spaced cruisers and we were out into Home Harbour, again with all paint and buoyancy intact.

This time, unbeknownst to the others, I decided it IS a race, Rupert, and set off in a straight line, as close to Farlington Marshes as I could get, aiming for our distant slipway. Only when I spotted the dry mud banks against the hull of the incoming dredger did I realise this course wouldn’t work, so headed more towards the Broom buoy (as Neil had suggested, in his infinite wisdom), with daggerboard and rudder raised to the max. I managed to squeak over the shallows and into the channel without hitting the bottom (or any seals) and was ashore in minutes…which only meant I had to get the trailers for all the other boats which had wisely taken more circuitous routes (the losers! ?).

Thanks to Neil for the organisation, Paul & Ian and Roger & Joe for their long day on the patrol boats and to everyone who took part. Wonderful weather, interesting sailing and fun company – I even managed not to shout at myself this time. But I did fall in for the third time during a botched arrival on the slipway – luckily a passing seagull and dismembered crab leg were the only witnesses to that.

Testimonials from the 2022/23 Academic Year

Teacher Testimonials:

“The transformation in this young man was unbelievable, he loved sailing and you could see his confidence grow. He would speak when commanding the boat and his body language shifted, he was confident and upright and would make eye contact. As time progressed, he spoke more and his confidence grew. He then started to return to his mainstream lessons at school and spent very little time in the Victory Suite”

“Students in our school attend after school revision sessions, the average attendance of their year group was 35% for after school revision, the group who attend PSTT was 89%. As a group they got some of the best results in the school and the best SEN results in Portsmouth. They achieved the highest SEN results in our academy trust from all the TKAT schools in the country”

Testimonials from Will Keyser, our Chief Instuctor:

“In June, we took nine Year 10s to the Careers Fair and the Seawork Maritime Industry Show. Rachel Dunn pointed us in the direction of it and they were unbelievably helpful. The kids were excellent and spoke to several stands about the industry and regularly asked about apprenticeships. They also learned a lot about the industries involved whilst gathering as many freebies as they could. They were particularly excited by the boats that were moored there that we were able to look around. I think it was a real moment of inspiration for some of them”

“Sessions with ASY were great fun and it was awesome to see the guys thrive on Duel. For some of them it was a real “look at what I’m doing moment” and I don’t think they get many positive moments like that.”

SERCO continue to support PSTT students through work experience.

Due to the exciting harbour tours offered, three students were able to undertake work experience with SERCO. They had the opportunity to drive a tugboat and some of the other craft in the harbour. They even got to help bring a warship into the harbour. One of the students got amazing feedback and their group leader is hoping to send him back for work experience in the new academic year.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Serco UK for so generously donating their time to our young people. Over the last few weeks, all our groups got out on the water on a Portsmouth Harbour tour with Serco. They learned first-hand about some navigation and buoyage and some even got the chance to drive the big boats.

We know that experiences like this have a big impact on our young people – so much so that some of our Year 10 students will be completing their work experience with Serco later this year. What an amazing opportunity for our young people to learn more about careers available on the water and raise their aspirations for what they can achieve!

Round Hayling Island Dinghy Cruise

This Saturday will be a dinghy circumnavigation of Hayling Island. Leaving the club around low water we will proceed out of Langstone Harbour, south around the East Winner, across Hayling Bay to Chichester Bar Beacon and then into Chichester Harbour, landing at Hayling Island Sailing Club for lunch. We will then set sail up the Emsworth Channel, fork left into Sweare Deep and along to the slipway at the north end of Hayling Bridge, a convenient place to stop. The bridge can be negotiated either by capsizing your boat and walking it under (can be deep wading), or by lowering the mast and wading, paddling or rowing under. A tow under can be provided by a support rib if that would help. From the other side of the bridge we will set off back to Tudor SC, the route across the harbour depending on the state of the tide. High water is at 1800.

The event is aimed at more experienced helms in boats able to make good progress to windward. A briefing will be held around 9-30, after which we will start to launch, slowest boats first ideally. It would be most helpful if you could let us know you are considering taking part so we have an idea of numbers. If you have any crewing places available in your boat then please also let us know. Please bring lunch and plenty of clothing, better to err on the warm side than risk being cold. Boats with limited storage can place bags containing lunch or spare clothing with one of the ribs if they wish, to be retrieved at lunchtime.

At the time of writing the forecast seems to be on the change so anything could happen! You can ask questions or let us know your intentions either by emailing the dinghy captain (Hannah), dinghies, or via the Whatsapp group.

After many years excellent work as Tudor’s Treasurer, Janice is standing down at the end of her current term in September.

We would like to identify a new treasurer in good time so that we can do an orderly hand-over before Janice stands down.

If you think you may be interested in this role, please let me know so that Janice and I can give you more information. You don’t need to have any accountancy qualifications, but should have knowledge of standard finance / accounting practices and good computer skills.

Maggie gets a good send off from Tower Bridge!

Maggie started her challenge to row around Great Britain when she and her all women crew mates (Team Ithaca) left Tower Bridge on Sunday. Friends and Family (including a group of Tudor rowers) gathered at Tower Bridge to give them a noisy send off, see photos below, with coverage of the start being provided on all major news channels, Instagram footage of the start can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CtFiFYhNIU1/.

Team Ithaca will be rowing continuously and unsupported and, if successful, will be the first team of six, male or female, to have completed the circumnavigation, and if they complete it in less than 50 days will have achieved a new world record.

Unfortunately, however, they have had a frustrating start to their journey as they have been battling against strong headwinds whilst trying to get out of the Thames estuary and are currently moored off the Isle of Sheppy waiting for the wind to drop.

Working in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, the boat has been specially modified to collect data on microplastics, sound pollution, salinity, temperature and even traces of marine biology through DNA samples. The data will be used to assess the environmental damage and long term impact of pollutants in our seas and oceans, contributing to the largest dataset of its kind for UK seas.

The chosen charity for the team is the CanRehab Trust and donations for this can be made through the teams just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/teamithaca.

If you would like to be added to a WhatsApp group that is following Maggie on her epic journey then please send your mobile telephone nr to me at rowing. The crews journey can also be tracked using the YB tracking app just type in GB Row Challenge.

Southsea Watersports Festival July 9th

A celebration of water sports is taking place on the Eastney Esplanade just by the Coffee Cup. From Kayaking, SUP, Rowing, Windfoil, Sailing, and swimming, to clothing brands and gear, plus water safety, the enviroment, and the oceans. Hosted by Believe & Achieve, Tudor will be taking part to showcase our club, and invite new members. We’ll be down there with SSAC and ASWC, so we can really promote our corner of the harbour.

Our Rowing section have volunteered to represent us for the day on the beach (thank you) and will be running taster sessions as well as mingling with the public to talk about all things Tudor.

I’ve included a link below so you can find out more about the day, and book yourself in if you want to try some new watersports.

It’s free if you want to just come down and mingle and shop.

If you’d like to be involved on the day, we do need you ?

For example:

  • Can you spare an hour or two on the Tudor ‘stand’ to answer questions and give out leaflets? Even 30 minutes while you’re there would be helpful.
  • Do you have a trestle or folding table Tudor can borrow for the day?
  • Do you have a gazebo Tudor can borrow for the day?

Please get in touch with me if you can help. Thank you.

Here’s the link to find out more ?

Rowing Update

Record turnout for last week’s Friendly Friday rowing evening

Thank you to those of you who attended the TSC Friendly Friday last week and congratulations to the winning crew of Steve from Eastney Cruising Association (ECA), Ross from the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre and Vivien from TSC. Sandy Craig was awarded the VIPER trophy, in recognition of the help and support that he provides for the rowing section. However, the top prize of the wooden spoon (beautifully crafted by Yvonne Adams) was awarded to the losing crew of Mandy from the Coastal Rowing Academy, Helen from ECA and Nina Dadd from TSC, see photos.

This month saw a record turn out of 41 rowers and coxes taking part in the racing with many more coming along just to enjoy the fun, drink beer and eat excellent food from the galley.

The Friendly Friday rowing races are held on the last Friday of every month (the next one being on Friday 30th June) between April and the end of August and all Tudor members are invited to come along and join in the fun either as a rower or spectator. If you are not already in the rowing group but would like to take part in the racing next month then please email me at rowing and I will add you to the list of rowers. If you want to come along to spectate then please feel free to just turn up, although if you want to eat then this will need to be pre-booked on WebCollect.

Thank you to all those who help with the organisation and running of the Friendly Fridays.

Happy Rowing!

Why not try Gig or Sliding Seat Rowing

The rowing section provides introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing.

The introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing run at 6 pm on Tuesday evenings during the summer months (alternative times can be arranged if these are not convenient). These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s individual ability and are great fun.

If you would like to book onto a session then please email me at rowing.

Thank you

Commodore’s Update

Once again we’ve seen the club full and thriving this month. It’s great to see more people getting back out on the water now the weather’s finally settled, and the Open Day was a great success with over a hundred people enjoying our facilities in the sunshine.

Cadets started up again last week and will be running every Tuesday from 5:30pm. Please do tell friends and family about this – it’s a great, low-key way to get children sailing, and this year we’re including some rowing and paddling as well.

We are very pleased to welcome staff at the Andrew Simpson Watersport Centre to the club as honorary members for the rest of this year. They have been very helpful to us in many ways, and we look forward to building further on this relationship, and maybe joining them for a game of pool on a Friday evening!

Finally, the Exec were pleased to appoint David Heath as Duties Manager, and Steve Yoxon as Fundraising Officer. We look forward to working with them as we develop these new roles.

Paddles Up People! – Summer is coming

Summer is almost upon us (hopefully ?) and paddling in company is beckoning.

Those of you that came to the celebration evening a few weeks back will remember the exciting plans and ideas Alex presented for getting us all together on the water.

As with everything marvellous about Tudor, the power is in its people. So to that end Alex and I would like to invite you to an informal get together (we can try out the new sofas) on Wednesday 31st May 7pm to 8pm. We want to hear more about what you’d like to do this summer on your kayaks and SUPs and how, together, we can make that happen. Flag officers have to bring biscuits and put the kettle on. If you can’t make it but have ideas please get in touch with me.

Rowing Update

Hamble River Raid

Last Saturday’s Hamble River Raid was the first Rowing Regatta of the Season and as usual Tudor made their presence known.

Five Gigs with a crew of 23 rowers/coxes made the short trip down the M27 from Tudor to Hamble le Rice to fly the flag for Tudor Sailing Club, and take part in the annual River Raid which this year included 76 rowing/paddling craft of various types, 13 of which were Bursledon Gigs.

For some this was their first rowing regatta and as the start approached you could sense the nerves and excitement building in the air, but these pre-race nerves soon calmed once the crews had the oars in their hands, and their faces took on a focused look of determination as they prepared for the challenge ahead.

The race follows a 3.6 nautical mile course which runs up river from the Quay at Hamble le Rice to a turning point outside the Jolly Sailor at Bursledon. This years race was particularly hard as crews had to battle against a strong head wind and falling tide for the first half of the race. But as usual the Tudor crews dug in hard, found their rhythm, and battled through the pain barrier to finish the race in strong positions.

Navigator and Freedom taking 2nd and 3rd place overall, with Navigator only missing out on the first place (which was taken by our nemesis the Elephant Boat Yard) by 32 seconds. In the end, however, it was the women who stole the day with 3 of the 5 crews being female. Orange Peel took 1st place in the women’s category with Friendship taking 2nd and Olive 4th.

Congratulations to all involved particularly those whose first race this was!

Rowing Friendly Friday – 26th May

This Friday is the 2nd Rowing Friendly Friday of the season which is open to all Tudor members, previous rowing experience is not required, all you need is to be prepared to give it a go. If you would like to join in with the rowing then please arrive by 6pm for a 6:15 briefing and email me at rowing so i can put you on the list.

Whether you want to row or just come along and watch you are very welcome to join the Tudor Rowers this Friday for a fun filled evening.

The galley will be providing curry with a vegetarian option which must be pre-ordered on web collect by Thursday of this week, remember no order, no food.

Treasurer Vacancy

After many years excellent work as Tudor’s Treasurer, Janice is standing down at the end of her current term in September.

We would like to identify a new treasurer in good time so that we can do an orderly hand-over before Janice stands down.

Natterjack Cruise 2023

Natterjack’s 2023 sailing expedition for this year will hopefully make it to Newton Ferrers near Plymouth and back.

The plan, at this time is:

  • Langstone to Studland 40nm
  • Studland to Lulworth 20nm
  • Lulworth to Brixham 60nm
  • Brixham to Newton Ferrers 40nm
  • Newton Ferrers to Dartmouth 30nm
  • Dartmouth to Swanage 70nm
  • Swanage to Langstone 40nm

Starting on Tuesday 13th June to around Wednesday, maybe Friday the following week. There are some long passages but the June daylight hours give lots of opportunity for the longer journeys and some flexibility for tides. I’m sailing single-handed however there is a space for a Tudor member to come along if anyone’s interested, shared costs. No experience is necessary. Alternatively maybe other Tudor boats want to come along, flotilla style?

If interested please contact me Brian via the Cruisers WhatsApp group (see below) or via the Tidal Diamond email (the email will be forwarded).

What a Year That Was!

The Open Day was a great success, but it was also the first anniversary for some of us, and what a wonderful year it has been.

It started with some intense but fantastic training by John Woodbridge, that sent me on the path to loving the sport of rowing.

My first row to the ‘Coffee Cup’ was the most memorable with a great sense of achievement. Since then I have been fortunate to row with a number of brilliant people and have continued to learn all about our lovely harbour….some of that learning came from getting stuck in the mud, the most successful lesson in my opinion!

I have achieved many things in those 12 months, including rowing to the Fairway, Around Portsmouth and Hayling island, Man Overboard Training (respect to Steve and John for being the men that went overboard!) The Winter Trophy, Friendly Fridays, The Tudor Challenge….the list goes on.

At the beginning of this year I joined the Social Committee working closely with another group of amazing people…..and boy do they work hard! I was staggered by the amount of work and hours that go on behind the scenes.

My biggest and final achievement of my first year at Tudor was coxing a great crew at the Hamble River Raid…what a day that was! It was exciting, hard work and emotional all rolled into one.

I have made great friends from within the Rowing, s and Kayaking sections and thank them all for their kindness and at times patience with this newbie.

So my first year has come to an end and I look forward to everything that is to come….thanks to all for making my journey so special…

Club Duty Opportunities

Impress our guests this Sunday at the open day

Hi, the open day this Sunday is a vital chance to increase our membership and we need to show the club at its best , with this in mind a clean and tidy up of the clubhouse and surrounding area is needed. This will count towards your duty hours and can be carried out over the next few days at a time to suit yourself. The following work needs your help:

  • Clear the small compound of any rubbish, pallets, any broken plastic patio tables.
  • Remove weeds from patio and veranda area.
  • Remove weeds from fence line, please don’t use a strimmer on the outside as there are plants which will eventually cover the fence.
  • Move the life jacket storage box to the south end of the clubhouse.
  • Please do NOT put any garden rubbish in the skip.
  • The Club house will need a clean on Saturday.

Already 90 people have booked to visit the club so your help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully boost our membership. Please email me at maintenance

Thanks

Patrol Boat

Be a Buddy

You’ll remember this from a few weeks back, so this is a timely nudge with the open day just ahead of us. We’ve had a large number of bookings for the open day and naturally we hope this will lead to new members joining us. The first few weeks for new members are filled with questions. We continue to evolve the support points in place to make life as easy as possible and one of these is buddies. Being a buddy doesn’t mean doing the work for a member or being available 24/7, it’s more about someone knowing your name and asking for a point in the right direction every now and again. Please contact me via email or WhatsApp if you’d be happy to help out either generally or with your specialist subject.

Tudor Rowing on the Great Glen

Take a group of eight keen and adventurous rowers, mix it with a bunch of new friends, add dramatic scenery, breathtaking lakes, narrow locks, mossy and heathery mountains, castle ruins, furry cows and a pinch of Scottish accent and you’ll have the perfect recipe for a glorious experience!

Over the last bank holiday weekend, the Tudor rowers partnered up with St. Andrews Coastal Rowing Club and ventured the Great Glen Fault, rowing through the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness. The 60 miles (nearly 97 km) journey was spread over three days, rowing with mixed crews on St. Ayles skiffs.

A series of locks and canals took the group to their first loch, Loch Lochy, a 10 miles (16 km) lake surrounded by a beautiful view of the Highlands: the sun blessed the crossing, and the rowers had ideal weather conditions to familiarise with the skiffs and have a few sprints on those black waters. After more locks, canals and Loch Oich, the gigs arrived at Fort Augustus, a scenic village with an impressive staircase of five locks that led the rowers into the majestic Loch Ness. With its 22,5 miles (36 km) length, 745 ft (227 m) depth in its deepest point, and really dark waters, all the rowers were mesmerised by its charm, and some of them swear to have seen some unusual swirling and rippling of the water surface, perhaps due to Nessie coming closer to the surface to have a look at its new guests!

The final destination, Inverness, came way too soon; the group of rowers started their journey as two distinct entities, each one representing their own club, but arrived at the finish line as a single big group of friends, exchanging promises to meet up again, perhaps down on the Solent.

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing, new people are always welcome!

The Life Recreation ReMEDIES Project has been featured in a video by the Eden Project on the importance of Seagrass for the environment and water quality. You can see the video at https://youtu.be/aW9WJZaD9Ds and read more at https://www.edenproject.com/seagrass and https://saveourseabed.co.uk. I remember using the top of the seagrass showing above the surface as a sign that it was time to get back to the mooring pronto back when I was first sailing at Tudor. From the moorings to the shore was covered with it on both sides.

Community Conversation Osborne Bay Voluntary No Anchor Zone Proposal

Osborne Bay hosts a significant area of seagrass, but there are already signs of disturbance from recreational activity. One of the aims of the ReMEDIES project is to reduce and remove some of this pressure to allow this seagrass bed to flourish without need for restorative measures, such as seagrass planting, in the future. To achieve this, Natural England have proposed a Voluntary No Anchor Zone (VNAZ) to help boaters make informed decisions about where to anchor. Join us at Hill Head Sailing Club to hear more about the project and the proposed VNAZ. This will be an open forum for discussion, questions and feedback, we would love to hear from you.

Please see the proposal document below for more information.

Row GB Race

So what does a midlife crisis look like? Some take up new hobbies, others start riding motorcycles but in the rowing section of Tudor we do epic adventures. I needed something to challenge me before i tuned 50 next year so this I my crisis and it might even come with a world record.

On the 4th June I start the biggest adventure on the water – the GB Row Challenge is a 2000 mile continuous and unsupported rowing race around the entire coast of Great Britain.

As part of Team Ithaca, I will depart from tower bridge in what is acknowledged as the world’s toughest rowing race: battling through some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, complex tidal steams and the volatile British weather.

Only one female crew has ever achieved this incredible feat. Team ithaca will be the next female crew to join the history books, as part of GB Row 2023.

Throughout our race, we’ll be partnered with the University of Portsmouth, collecting vital environmental samples and datafor their research into: marine biodiversity via eDNAsampling; microplasticsin our waters; airborne microplastics; water temperature; salinity; ocean noiseand pollution.

The correlation between these data sets will allow for trends to be assessed over time. This will be the first time this has been done effectively in UK waters.

We are also rowing for a charity called ‘CanRehab’

CanRehab trust helps people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis to become or stay active by providing safe, individualised exercise programmes. People who have had a cancer diagnosis are matched with a registered cancer exercise qualified instructor who can provide them with either online or face to face individualised support. CanRehab trust was founded by Dr Anna Campbell MBE who is professor with a special interest in cancer and exercise and founder of the first training provider for cancer and exercise rehabilitation in the UK. The charity seeks to support people affected by cancer to stay or become more active and increase their ability to self-management during and after cancer treatments and improve their quality of life. CanRehab trust has developed a register of approved personal trainers and health professionals qualified to provide safe tailored exercise programmes for people living with cancer. We aim to match individuals who require an exercise programme to the appropriately qualified instructor who can provide a number of safe and effective exercise sessions tailored to the person’s needs based on their diagnosis, stage of treatment, other health issues and previous exercise experience.

So if you are at loose end of the 4th June and want to wave me off from tower bridge then please let me know, or if you want to come see the boat the day before in London I can arrange that as well, we will be based in St Catherine’s dock from the 1st until we leave.

It is difficult to follow that collection of articles, particularly with the last one combining the environment, charity and possible world records! I’ll give it a go though by simply highlighting a few things.

Above, and below in the Diary Dates, it is worth noting that cadets will be back up and running on Tuesdays from next week. For more details contact the Cadet Captain on the email above.

Another item worth bringing more attention to from the Diary Dates below is the Supported Recreational Sailing starting this coming Saturday. For more details see below the Diary dates for the contact email for the Dinghy Captain and the WhatsApp group.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.
