Waiting for the Tide

Not the time of year that you really want to be thinking about coming ashore for the winter, especially if you haven’t launched. Unfortunately in uncertain times it is necessary to think and plan ahead. With this in mind I will point cruiser owners towards Webcollect email sent earlier today on this issue.

That said, although social events are still on hold, as is the regular racing program, there are some organised activities coming back on line, so I am modifying the Diary Dates below to provide a reminder.

As a summary of the details from recent Tidal Diamonds:

• Rowing is back and being organised by a WhatsApp group. Contact the Rowing Captain at rowing for more details.
• Social dinghy sailing is being co-ordinated on another WhatsApp group. For this one contact the Dinghy Captain at dinghies.
• Women on the Water is also being organised using WhatsApp and meeting weekly on a Thursday at 5pm. Contact the WOW organisers at wow.

Obviously all this is happening with strict social distancing and other precautions necessary for the given activity, such as limiting numbers. Specific details will be provided.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Lost and Found

Hi all Tudor members,

Unfortunately I have to report the loss / mislaying of an ST 1000 autopilot complete with a small 12 volt battery. The unit is used by the rowing section, at some time during the last 6 weeks it has ”gone missing” any information as to its possible whereabouts would be hugely appreciated, please email the rowing captain at rowing

Summer is still in full swing, but we are thinking ahead to the end of season! Given the current situation with Covid-19, and the unpredictability of future developments, we must plan as best we can. Here are our current thoughts and recommendations.

1. If lockdown ends, and all restrictions are lifted…

…then we will be back to normal. Lift-out could take place as originally scheduled on the weekend of 10/11 October. However this seems to us the least likely scenario, and we cannot trust to luck that this will happen.

2. If there is a surge in infection rates, and tight restrictions are re-imposed (either nationally or locally)…

…then there is a risk that boats will have to be left on moorings over winter. Insurance companies are unlikely to provide cover, and affected members will be in breach of club rules. This is a worst-case scenario, which cannot be ruled out. A local lockdown might affect the club and its environs. Or it might be imposed where you live, and impede your ability to travel to the club.

3. If the present limitations continue…

…then social distancing rules and guidance for people in vulnerable groups will continue to apply. We could not organise a lift-out weekend on that basis. Boat crews (minimum three per boat), water babies, the compound team, and others need to work in close proximity, and many of our volunteers are in the older, and more at-risk category.

4. Therefore, your Committee asks:

• that owners of cruisers at present on the water, or who still intend to self-launch for a taste of boating this season, consider carefully when you will be able to recover your boats;

• in particular— could you lift out during September?;

• bearing in mind that the slipway can accommodate a maximum of three boats drying out, don’t leave it to the last possible moment;

• remember that spring tides, with strong flows up and down-harbour make drying out on the slip hazardous—therefore you need to plan to lift out on a neap;

• you will need to organise the helpers required by club procedures. Don’t skimp on safety.
