Upcoming Dinghy Events

The next scheduled dinghy event is the Boxing day race. But unfortunately, the tide time means a 9am race start. This is likely to result in a poor turn out of both competitors and volunteers coming down the club after overindulging on Christmas day. Therefore, I am cancelling this year’s boxing day race.

This means the next dinghy event that is planned to go ahead is the Icicle series race 1 on 17th January starting at 13:30. For this and the subsequent icicle races to go ahead we need members who are trained up to please volunteer via DutyMan.

Call for Cadet Rowers

Hi All Tudor members,

The rowing section is keen to coach young Tudor members in the art of rowing.

As you are probably aware the rowing section is constantly active all year round, with crews rowing every Tuesday morning, Wednesday evening and Saturday morning and Novice training on Saturday mornings at approx. 1000hrs.

When the rowing section first started some 4 years ago we trained a number of cadets and they became and still are very proficient rowers winning races against juniors and adults. These young rowers are also very competent sailors and remain very active in the club and in particular they cox for us on a regular basis, however they are now “Ageing fast” and their lifestyles are more complex, consequently they are finding it increasingly difficult to support our coxing needs.

We have started to introduce ‘youngsters’ from among the memberships children but for some time now we have neglected to train young club members and it is that deficiency we are now wanting to address.

So if you have children or Grandchildren between the ages of 12 and 18 who would appreciate learning new boating skills, (there is nothing like rowing to drive home the appreciation of tidal shifts) massively increase their level of fitness but most important of all want to have Fun on the water we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email:- rowing and we will make it happen.

(Volunteers will be contacted in due course in line with current social distancing restraints)

(These activities are monitored by the club welfare officer.)

By the way the above Coaching offer also still applies to all Tudor SC adults as a major part of the rowing sections rapid growth has been driven by our ongoing Saturday morning novice training sessions.

Waiting for the Tide

If anybody has been following the INEOS TEAM UK putting together their challenge for the 36th America’s Cup on YouTube, you will have seen some pretty impressive engineering with their high tech foiling yachts. Bringing things a little more down to earth, all be it not exactly suited to Langstone or Tudor, I had a couple of videos suggested to me from back in 2017 that I thought some members may find entertaining.

First off there is an RYA video “Incredible Foiling Laser – Taking off at Southampton Water Activities Centre – Flying Boat“:

https://youtu.be/4HkIs5VzXCA

Not to be outdone, and likely a more impressive feat of engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, is “The Foiling Optimist” – and yes, you read that correctly, an Optimist!:

https://youtu.be/UokOO60dsMU

Impressive though those modifications are, I’m still not planning to try it on any of my boats!

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world, even though this lockdown is slightly different things are far from normal. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Stay safe.
