Race Tactics and Patrol Boat Refresher Evening

Calling all Racers and Patrol Boat Helms / Crews – Reminder – Race Tactics and Patrol Boat Refresher Evening Friday 8th May

Please come along to the club on Friday 8th May at 7:30pm for a Race Tactics Discussion and Patrol Boat Refresher session hosted by Paul Rivington. The attached poster has more details.

For Racers, the session will cover tactics. Paul will share his knowledge and experience to help you understand how to make the best of the start sequence, how to use the position of the boat to best effect during the race, and if you make a mistake, what to do about it.

For Patrol Boat helm / crew, Paul will provide a refresher looking at some scenarios and best practice in what to do. This is a ‘must do’ if it is a while since you qualified as a patrol boat helm or crew.

Come along to the club at 7:30 on Friday 8th May to brush up on both your racing and patrol boat skills.

Forthcoming Treasurer Vacancy

In November this year, Steve Yoxon will have completed four years as club Treasurer and, with a lot of hard work, he has managed to get the club accounts and financial systems into a very good state. However, he now finds that his work is competing too much for his time and would like to hand the role over to a successor.

We have decided to advertise for a replacement Treasurer now, so that the successor can shadow Steve for several months, including preparing the end of year accounts.

For details, please see the attached Job Description.

To apply for this post, which will fulfil Club Duty requirements, please apply to the Hon. Secretary, Jan Sobey, secretary by 15th May 2015.

Dutyman – Final call for Wetside Volunteers

Thanks to those who have recently volunteered for Wetside duties. However there remain further vacant positions for patrol boat helms / crew and race officers for our 2015 season including many across the summer months. The ‘at risk’ events include the High Water Cruise, the Regatta, the Family Fun Day – plus many of our standard summer races.

  • If you have not yet been into Dutyman to select your duties, please do so as soon as possible.
  • If you have already selected some duties, please could you pick up an extra one or two? This applies particularly to those who have only selected winter duties. We know you select winter duties because you like to sail in the summer – but unless those who sail in the summer also do summer duties, there can be no summer sailing!
  • If you are on our reserve list or have fulfilled duties elsewhere, please could you do a duty or two?

The sailing season cannot operate without volunteers. This is a final call for volunteers before we start cancelling events that are not fully rostered. Please help us to keep the sailing calendar thriving by volunteering.

Dutyman can be accessed directly from the links on the Tudor website. If you need help accessing Dutyman, please contact Tim Gallier on duties.

If you no longer wish to be on the Dutyman list, please let Tim know.

Coastal Defence

The coastal defence scheme currently being developed for the north of Portsea Island is progressing well, and I am pleased to tell you that we are starting the construction of new coastal defences at Anchorage Park next week.

Attached is a letter from Alex Prior, the project manager, which summarises what the construction works will involve.

Please feel free to get in touch if you would like any further information.

Kind regards,

Sarah Ball

Tide & Weather Service

There is a new Internet weather service that seems quite useful, it is called Skegs. You can set it up for anywhere but for Langstone Harbour, the following link should work: http://www.skegs.net/forecast.jsp?port_name=901

The forecast gives tidal height as well as weather.

I have no connection with this service but give it a try, you may like it.
