Town Quay berth holders start season with informative Active Marina session

New and existing berth holders had a chance to get to know each other and learn more about how to look after their yachts, when Town Quay Marina, Southampton, opened the season with an action packed afternoon, part of the RYA’s Active Marina scheme.

Yarmouth Trophy Weekend

Another change of plan !! From Arthur Baldwin : Ladies and Gentlemen, The cancellation of our evening meal at Yarmouth Sailing Club was a great disappointment. At that time no one else in Yarmouth could accommodate a potential throng like ours. I have since heard from Royal Solent Yacht Club (RSYC) that they have had a client cancellation for the evening of 13th May and can now offer us an evening meal if we want it.

Friendly Fridays – Friday 28th April (This Friday!)

It is the first of this seasons Friendly Fridays this weekend; this week’s focus is on ‘help with your rigging and launching’. If you would like some support in rigging your boat, or just want to have a ‘shake down sail’, this Friday is dedicated to you! We would also welcome the knowledge and experience of long standing club members, to offer help and support for our less experienced members. This week’s activities will include:

  • Rigging you boat – not sure about rigging? Experienced sailors on hand to offer support.
  • How to book and rig the club boats – learn how to book, rig and sail our expanding fleet of club boats (including the Wisiwig, our club Wayfarer).
  • Fancy a kayak or SUP? Paddle in the company of other club members.

Why not make a night of it? After your water based fun, there will be a Chilli for dinner and the chance of a bit of fun, with our race horse night. Please book on Webcollect if you require food.

Gig Rowing

This coming Saturday 29th April the Gig will be on the water for an Easy Rowing session at 1000hrs. These sessions are open to all club members and will only last approx. 30 minutes on the water. They are for a bit of nautical fun. Kit needed: A buoyancy aid of some sort, wet boots or wellies, gloves and a windcheater over some layers.

Any members who have tried the Gig and would like to engage in a regular weekly row please email me and I will put your name on our core regulars email group.

Lost Property

There is a growing pile of discarded clothing and kit in the corner of the mens changing room. Quite a lot of this looks like cadet clothing. Over the next few weeks, if the weather is right, we will lay this kit out for people to look through at events like cadets, compound reorg etc. Please take the time to check through it to see if any of it belongs to you or your family.

Once we get into May, anything which is not named (and is not sailing kit which could be made use of by the club) will be packed up and taken to a textiles recycling point.

Update on Bruce

The Exec are aware that we had intended to have our committee boat, Bruce, launched for the beginning of the season but, unfortunately, there will be a delay in getting her launched. Whilst various members have spent significant amounts of time working on Bruce through the winter, a misunderstanding and a lack of effective communication recently has put the project behind schedule. This delay is no reflection on the skills, effort and energy of those who have worked on her but the result is that Bruce is unlikely to be launched until the end of May.

The Exec are very grateful to those who have been so generous with their time, energy and skills on this project and if anyone would like to join this project (and clock up some maintenance hours over the next couple of months) please contact the Sailing Secretary.
