Mervyn Wheatley has entered Tamarind for OSTAR 17 which starts from Plymouth on Monday 29 May. In 1956 Blondie Hasler became interested in the challenges of offshore singlehanded sailing – “one man, one boat, the ocean…”. Over the next few years he conceived of a transatlantic race against the prevailing winds and currents whose purpose was to develop the necessary seamanship, equipment and techniques.

Oyster farms for marinas ?

10,000 oysters already introduced in the Solent The Blue Marine Foundation, in conjunction with the University of Portsmouth, MDL Marinas and Land Rover BAR, have introduced more than 10,000 oysters into the Solent. The ambitious plan is to introduce five million oysters over the next five years, and MDL Marinas will host oyster nurseries under its pontoons.

Campaign relaunched The Cruising Association and Yachting Monthly have relaunched a petition asking the Government to tackle the problem of poorly-marked fishing gear. The previous petition was halted pending the general election. The petition is running along side an RYA initiative to gather evidence of fishing gear entanglements to demonstrate the scale and severity of the issue.

Coastguard appoints first female boss

Julie-Anne Wood Julie-Anne Wood began her career as a watch assistant with the Coastguard Service in 1999 at Milford Haven. She progressed through the ranks to Rescue Coordinator Centre Manager in 2008, and head of technical training and standards in 2013. Her appointment as Head of the National Maritime Operations Centre in Fareham, and the ten Coastguard Operations Centre around the country is one of the most senior positions within Her Majesty's Coastguard, and heretofore has been headed by a man.
