RNSA(P) Wednesday Spring Series race 1

The organiser of the RNSA(P) Wednesday evening race series heaved a big sigh of relief as the abysmal weather forecast from early in the week of strong winds and rain was replaced on the day by a forecast of a weather window giving westerly 12-14 knots gusting 20. And that's what we got! Despite temperatures down to 6 degrees with wind chill on top, seven yachts featured on the start line for the first evening race of the season.

2018 Tudor Dinghy Handicaps

The dinghy handicaps for this season are now published, with copies available at the club and also on the website (in the documents area):

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Tudor%20Dinghy%20Handicaps%20for%20the%202018%20Season.pdf

Thank-you to Ian Tonge for his hard work putting these figures together – it is a mammoth task!

The Tudor Handicap System follows the RYA handicap adjustment method, with a few tweaked variables. The system uses club racing data from the previous 2 sailing seasons to adjust handicap numbers for each class. If there is not enough data for a class, the club uses the published RYA number for that year.

Trafalgar Pursuit Race – Saturday 31st March, 12:00

The first race of the season will be the Trafalgar Pursuit Race, with the first start scheduled for the Gull class, at 12:00, with the race duration lasting for 100 minutes. A list of class start times are available using the link below (any classes not on the list can be added on the day). The start line is likely to be from a committee boat, stationed close to the club house. A flip chart will be used on the committee boat to display the time offset.

Class Start Times:

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Pursuit%20Start%202018.pdf

The sailing instructions for the event can be found on our club website:

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Pursuit%20Race%20-%20Sailing%20Intructions%202016.pdf

If you have not participated in a pursuit race before, there will be expert advice available to you, both at the Friendly Friday session on the previous evening, and also before the race on the Saturday.

In short – boats start at different times depending on your handicap, with the slower classes setting off first and faster classes chasing them down. The race is run for a set time period, and positions are recorded after this time period has elapsed, wherever you might be on the race course. In summary, it takes the normal ‘handicap style’ race and turns it on its head.

Spring Series, Race 1 / Easter Egg Race – Sunday 1st April, 12:30

The first Spring Series race is scheduled for this Sunday. At the time of writing we are still short of a race officer. If anyone is able to spare a few hours to assist with this duty, please log into dutyman, or contact Ian Simpson, Dutyman Administrator. duties

Spring Series 1 / Easter Egg Race – Sunday 1st April – 12:30

This race is no Aprils’ Fool… the first of the Spring Series races give sailors the chance to win some chocolate (or ginger beer if you cannot eat chocolate!).

This race is held from the club line and will be around the cans in the harbour.

Training Day – Monday 2nd April (Easter MondA bit of fishing for membersay) – 12:00

The sailing committee have scheduled a training A bit of fishing for membersday prior to the Cruiser Launch weekend, to allow members to receive training on some of the club equipment.

If you are interested in any of the following exercises, please contact me below, and I will add your name to the list.

Gurgle – Pioner Multi

  • Familiarisation session with our new club patrol boat / ferry. Session will include practising coming into the slip and using the bow door / loading ramp, and coming alongside a cruiser on a mooring.

Bruce – Committee Boat

  • Shore-based familiarisation session, suitable for both race officers and wannabe tug boat drivers / operators (including those who wish to use Bruce for fishing trips etc.).

Duties

As Richard has said, the new sailing season is due to get underway on the 31st of March, thank you to those who have volunteered, as of the 26th March we are in a much better position. This weekend now requires only a race officer for the Sunday. Please volunteer via DutyMan.

A bit of fishing for members

  • Sunday 1 April 1: a Race officer
  • Sunday 15th April: a Race officer
  • Sunday 21st April: a Patrol boat crew
  • Saturday 28th April: a Patrol boat crew
  • Sunday 29th April: a Patrol boat crew

Race Officers: We are in general short of race officers for the season and would appreciate some volunteers to be Race Officers, training is available along with support from the racers in the pre and post race phases. The main part of the job is starting the race and timing the finishes. Do not worry about processing the results as support can be provided by the racers after the finish.

Club Boats

With the first weekend of this years sailing season fast approaching i’d like to remind you that the clubs boats are now available to book under the FastCourts booking system. In order to do this please follow one of the links from the website or go to clubboats but please remember you must be able to rig and derig the boats competently. This will be covered in a demonstration session, please keep an eye on Tidal Diamonds for the next one or email clubboats to find out more. If you are registered but are having difficulty logging in then please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Club Boat Charges 2018 / Booking System

The club are operating a new online booking system for 2018, which covers both club events and free sailing / rowing activities and also includes the facility to pay for the use of club boats. The system is going live this weekend for dinghies and will go live shortly for the gig.

Rates for 2018 have been set as follows:

  • Cadets – £2 per person- to be collected on the night
  • Single handed dinghy £3 per race / session
  • Double handed dinghy £5 per race / session

The gig is also going to be included and charging has been discussed but awaits final approval, currently it looks like it will be £3 per person per session.

Cadet payments will be collected on the night, all others will be via FastCourts using PayPal. If you have booked a boat in the past you should already have a FastCourts login if not please have a look at FastCourts for further info and what to do if you would like to be able to use a club boat.

The diary in the club is no longer in use for booking, FastCourts is the only way to secure your boat booking. It is mobile friendly and regular users are encouraged to add credit to their account to speed up the booking process. https://fastcourts.com/clubs/TudorSailingClub.

Cruiser Safety

There were three incidents last week where members fell off cruisers, ladders or platforms whilst working on their boats, one of which was quite badly injured. I urge you all when working on your boat to take care, consider your safety and the potential consequences. Remember the old nautical proverb – one hand for yourself and one hand for the ship.

A bit of fishing for members

The sun is shining it won’t be long before you get your rods out (stop them naughty thoughts).

What is going to be the target fish? I think first is plaice. You will find them almost anywhere in the shallows. If you are not sure look for groups of small boats, they will be on the mussel beds. Fish with a small hook Size 2/0 long shank is my choice, on a long trace, baited with rag worm. Into April bream time, Bullocks patch is best option you will need to visit several time they don’t always feed. Once again a very small hook 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook on a long trace baited with little bits of squid. To find them look for other boats or drift until you catch, log the position then return and anchor up-tide.

Tight lines.

Bernie Clark
