Mad dog and Englishmen raise charity cash at The Dyson Dash

Broadstairs Sailing Club hosted their 11th annual Dyson Dash on the August Bank Holiday.

RNSA(P) Wednesday Autumn Series race 2

The rain laden dark clouds loomed over the western half of the Isle of Wight but fortunately for the small Autumn Series fleet they only produced shifting gusts in the eastern Solent not wetness. With the big guns of Sunshine and Jolly Jack Tar away in Dartmouth and Assassin preparing for sale, Tinker T became the scratch boat.

Priory Bay – Thanks

What a fantastic day – a sail to Priory Bay and back clocking up 20 + miles!

Thanks to our patrol boat drivers / navigators.

When we left Tudor the weather forecast was very good. At the entrance the visibility was not so good, we could not see the IOW. We stayed together as much as we could and the channel posed no problem. The wind was just right and a direction to get us there on one tack.

The beach was busy but plenty of room for us. We had a very welcome lunch, swim and relaxed for a while – a good time to talk to members we did not know so well.

Phil checked Chimet and the wind was showing 2 – 4 but felt less so we set off back to the club just after 14:00 hours. We all had to paddle / row out of the bay as there was very little wind and lots of anchored boats.

After a slow start the wind picked up and we were able to get home under our own ‘steam’.

This is a ‘must do’ trip in our calendar.

Well done to one and all,

Linda Vacher

Rowing News

Firstly, congratulations to the Freedom crew and the Padnell Paddlers Ladies rowing team, who were respectively the silver medal winners in their classes at the (un)Official Bursledon Gig World Championship at the weekend. Ian’s account the day can be read below.

On Saturday the rowing section will bring down two Concept 2 indoor rowing machines which will be available for anyone who would like to try rowing without getting their feet wet, and (depending on the launching and recovering activities on the slipway) we’ll have a boat available for anyone who has thought of trying rowing but not yet been out. Besides being great exercise it’s also a great way to work off the beer and burgers and make room for the Hog Roast later!

Tudor Rowing at the Bursledon Regatta.

Last Saturday on the river Hamble the Tudor SC rowing section entered both “Olive” and “Freedom” in the main race of the day “The first world Bursledon Gig championship” yes it is a bit over the top but everything has to start somewhere, anyway, the race is an all out 10 to 15 minute sprint.

17 Bursledons lined up and Tudors Freedom took second place overall (Just 11 seconds behind our Nemesis the “Elephant boys”) with the girls in Olive in their first ever race taking second place in the Ladies group.

Also Jay DuCane (Freedoms cox) took first place in the under sixteen swimming race.

It was also good to see a good contingent of our cruisers to boost Tudor’s presence at what is normally a very local Hamble affair. I know the organisers were very pleased to see us.

All in all another great day afloat.

Attached are a couple of still pics of the 2 crews afloat but we also rigged “GoPro” cameras on the jackstaff of each boat so if you would like to view the action just go to YouTube and type in “Hamble regatta 2019” where you will find 2 videos of Freedom which covers their whole race and to see the girls doing their stuff type in “Padnell paddler 2019” for 3 videos covering their whole race.

And here is a “Salty tale” to add to this occasion.

“Imagine if you will five old birds sat around a kitchen table drinking gin about three months ago. “wouldn`t it be a laugh to have a little row” hic “wheres the prossecco gone” “we could mess about and row to the pub in the summer” hic “want some more gin” “how hard can rowing be anyway” ….. Fast forward to last Saturday. After weekly training, many blisters, rowing past scores of awesome but distracting seals, and so much laughter we should have packed tena, the old birds took part in the Bursledon Gig “World Championship”. It’s called world because of us foreigners from the Tudor SC. And hey presto!!!!! we took silver in the ladies catagory!!!! Top old birds. Going for gold next year, after a few gentle rows to the *ahem* tea rooms. Special mention to the Tudor rowing boys that have trained us, customised Olive for us, rowed with us and undone all the tight nuts and bolts for us. Our next challenge will be London and the Thames great river? Or at the very least managing to put the hose away properly…..lol.”
