Tidal Diamond 347 – Nominations, Invoices, Dinghy meeting, Photo competition

Tidal Diamond No. 347

Nomination Meeting – Friday 8th November at 20:00 – Nominations required

The Nomination meeting, to nominate club officers and committee members to be elected at the AGM in January, has been moved to a Friday evening this year.

As always, ALL elected Executive committee and other committee posts (with the exception of the Commodore and Rear Commodore this year) are up for re-election at the AGM in January and all members are welcome and encouraged to stand for any post, as long as they have been members for 12 months or more and live within 40 miles of the club. It would be nice to have some contested posts again this year.

Executive Committee members nominations are required for:

Vice Commodore – Executive committee, Derek Beaves has advised that he does not wish to stand for a further 3 year term of office.

Hon. Secretary – Executive Committee, current Secretary, Mo Clark has indicated that she is prepared to accept nomination for another year.

Assistant Secretary – Executive committee, current Assistant Secretary, Jan Sobey has indicated that she is prepared to accept nomination for another year.

Maintenance Officer – Executive Committee, current Maintenance Officer, Dick Clark has indicated that he is prepared to accept nomination for another year.

Bosun – Executive Committee – current Bosun, George Thomson has indicated that he does not wish to stand again.

Social Secretary – Executive Committee, current Social Secretary, Steve Francis has indicated that he is prepared to accept nomination for another year.

Sailing Secretary – Executive Committee, this post is currently vacant.

Committee members nominations are required for:

Sailing Committee

Social Committee – two vacant posts

Bosun’s Committee – three vacant posts (Secretary, Engineer and Hoist Manager)

Maintenance Committee – possibly one vacant post

Wine Committee

As you can see, there are a number of committee positions that are definitely vacant, so please support your club and if possible come prepared to offer your services or to nominate another member and do not just rely on someone else to do it.

Richard Gunn
Commodore

2013 End of Summer Season Dinghy Meeting – TSC Clubhouse

This coming Saturday (19th October) we will be having the end of season Dinghy Meeting to discuss the summer events and the forthcoming 2014 series calendar. The meeting will directly follow the Compound Clearance which starts at 9 am. Apologies for not being more accurate on the timing – the last time I gave a specific time there was a lot of hanging around for everyone. Perhaps it’s gentle encouragement to come and assist with the Compound Clearance first then attend the meeting, many hands make light work as they say.

A loose agenda is bulleted below, but it will be your meeting and I’m more than happy to take any questions and give as much information as I possibly can.

  • What went well/what perhaps didn’t go so well for the 2012/2013 season
  • Saturday Series (down harbour starts)
  • Sunday Series
  • Sunset Series (including the two night races opening and closing the series)
  • All dinghy cruises
  • Trophy races (some of which are included in series racing and some have their own dedicated events)

2014 Dinghy Calendar Planning

  • It’s at this point I would have normally said what do you, the members, want to see more of? However in this case I’m more likely to be discussing potential programme reductions. This is due to resourcing issues which I will elaborate more on the day. It’s for that reason I heartily recommend your attendance.

Race Officer Information Evening (Wednesday 13th November)

  • An early discussion to encourage attendance from all our sailors, who may or may not race, and give an outline of what that evening will entail.

Finally the election of the Dinghy Captain for the following year

  • The role is that of a conduit from the dinghy membership to the Sailing Committee and fulfils a full maintenance duty for the year. Terms of Reference for the post are available on the club website

Very many thanks,

Phil Bryant
Dinghy Captain

Windies Wish for more Wind at Weymouth Speed Week

The RNSA Windsurfers are competing at Weymouth Speed week and have enjoyed three days of competetive sailing in less than optimal conditions, but they have made the most of it, posted some great speeds and are waiting for the wind to blow... With three days of competition completed the RNSA team competing at International Speedweek 2013 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy have made the most of a no wind day today Tuesday 15 Oct to catch up on gear preparations and repairs.

Tension and Drama in Adrians UKWA Formula National Title Challenge!

It all comes down to the last weekend as Adrian Wallis challenges to take the UKWA Formula National Title The final UKWA race event of the season and RYA Youths and Masters event took place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy during the weekend of 5/6 Oct. Saturday dawned to a steady 9kt breeze blowing across the harbour but the forecast was for the wind to ease as the day went on.

RNSA(P) Autumn Series Race 7

Windy, lumpy and bumpy was how best to describe the conditions awaiting the small autumn series fleet at Gilkicker point. The strong west going tide against an equally strong west North west wind gusting over 20 knots produced some turbulent seas on the start line off Gilkicker providing testing conditions for all the crews.

Compound Re-org

Many thanks for the offers of help I have already received from members for the re-org of the compound on the 19th October. Last year we spent a lot of time trying to identify boats without any identification on – simply wasting our time and really not funny.

PLEASE check that your boat and trolley is marked clearly, obviously and in an accessible place with your surname.

Do not assume that the label you put on last year is still on there and readable as I have seen that a lot are not! It goes without saying that all boats in the compound MUST have a current plaque on and these are being checked off my list now.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:-
There are a couple of boats that need attention, either the cover of off, tangled / trailing or the trolley is in bad condition / the tyre is flat.
We may well need to move your boat on the 19th October – it states in the bye-laws that all boats / trolleys must be in good condition. Boats must not be locked up in any way to render them immovable. Your compound space needs to be kept clear of weeds. If you intend to sail your boat through the winter then I will need to know a.s.a.p.
If you have only paid for a ‘Summer’ space then your boat will need to be removed from the compound shortly. Please let me know when you have done this so I can easily mark this on my list. Thank you.
If you plan to get to the Compound re-organisation please bring gloves and anything else you think might be of use the day e.g. gardening equipment.
If there are any dinghy sailors that would like to help on the recovery weekend then please let me know – on the whole the dinghy sailors tend to be younger and we do need some fit young men in wet or dry suits. Thankfully the water is still quite warm at the moment.
Thanks to the members who have kept me informed re compound matters in does help.
See you all for the talk on Hypothermia on Wednesday 16th.
Cheers,

Linda Vacher

Billy’s Lake Project, a local conservation group, is looking for a small rowing boat / old tender to allow them to carry out work on a small lake in the Waterlooville area. If anyone has one that they would be prepared to donate then I would be interested to here from them. It is a local community based project which has the aim of improving an area of unmanaged land for the benefit of the local community and wildlife. It is run by volunteers with grant funding support from Winchester / Havant and Hampshire County Council. A small boat would enable volunteers to get to difficult to access/deep areas of the lake to undertake clearance /conservation works. There is more information on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Billys-Lake-Project/209483422524619.
