NAB TOWER AND BACK…

Just a reminder about the Nab Tower Race this weekend. The course is easy to remember - out to the Nab Tower and back!

This race takes you further offshore than any of the other club races, and is worth taking part in for this aspect alone if you normally stay close inshore. Take a look at the description of the race in the Club Handbook if you want to know more.

Please remember that for safety reasons you will need to take a mobile phone with you (in a waterproof bag).

Please remember to register on the website so we know who's coming.

Race briefing at 10:30, race start at 11:00.

Janice Bell
Sailing Secretary

New Welfare Officer

I am Fiona Bowles and I have just been appointed as TSCs first Welfare Officer. My role will be to ensure that the club is a safe place to be, especially for children. I will also be making sure the child protection policy is up to date.
As the RYA puts it “Everyone should be treated with respect, and should show respect to others. If you are worried about the way another young person or adult is treating you or someone else, you or your parents can talk to the welfare officer.”

I have been a member of the club for 2 years and sail a Laser. I’ve sailed all my life and prior to Tudor I was a member of Bosham sailing club. I have a 9 month old baby called Sebastian- hence I haven’t been out on the water as much as I would have otherwise have liked over the last while. I work at QA Hospital as an emergency medicine doctor and have a particular interest in paediatrics.

Getting young people sailing is something I think is so important, it made a huge difference to my childhood to be out on the water. I do lots of safeguarding work and training through my job and when the Tidal Diamond came around I thought it was something useful that I could do. Keeping children safe is just so important. I also want adults to feel they can volunteer with children without putting themselves at risk.

My approach to being Welfare Officer is this:

  • The well being of children must be at the heart of everything we do
  • I want to help both children and adults enjoy their sailing and minimize risk for everyone
  • I’d like to get to know the cadets and be an ear for them if they ever need it
  • I want to support the cadet leaders in providing the safest environment they can for the children
  • I want to be a contact for anyone who has concerns that a child is being harmed through any of the 4 kinds of abuse:- neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse.

My plan is to:

  • Go along to cadets and watch and get to know everyone
  • Make sure everyone knows how to get hold of me if they need me including posters up in the club
  • Keep the safeguarding policy up to date
  • Make sure that cadet leaders have adequate safe-guarding training
  • Over this season do a full risk assessment, with the cadet leaders and see if there are any risks that are not being mitigated
  • I am going to do my advanced dinghy and powerboat courses and hope to do the dinghy instructors course over the next few years

I will be down at the cadet sessions the next few Wednesdays hoping to get to know everyone. My email is tscwelfareofficer, that and my mobile number will be up on posters in the club.

Any questions or concerns about safety, no matter how small please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Portland Race 1 of Series 2

Another gentle evening This year’s Friday second series started much like the first, with another gentle breeze which died completely as the race progressed. There were six entries on an evening that was dry, but threatening the storms forecast for later in the night. A two round short course was set, this later being shortened to one round, and the boats got away upwind on a short leg to buoy 2.

RNSA Late Summer Series Race 7

x With seven of the nine races complete, all eyes are on the score board for the Late Summer Series winners. The day started hot and sunny and almost windless, but by the evening the wind had built to between 10 and 14 Knots from the southwest so all yachts were close hauled for the race in the Eastern Solent to Cowes.
